21. What is best buy return policy? Detail Explanation!

There’s a 15-45 day open-item return/ exchange policy (outside of the holidays which are extended.) 15 days is the standard policy for most customers. 30 and 45 days are offered to Best Buy Elite and Elite Plus members respectively. Most of the products have free returns. But more expensive opened products like DSLR cameras, drones, hover boards, some expensive appliances, and more come with a restocking fee that is 15% of the pre-tax cost of the item*.

All mobile phones and other devices that can be activated on a mobile carrier have a 14 day (non-flexible) return/ exchange period with a $35 restocking fee.

Final-sale items are rare and you will be told of this at the point of sale. I’ve only encountered this >10 times in my whole time working there.

For most items in the store though, exceptions are possible. The exceptions are available at the discretion of the individual store’s management, so don’t rely on this possibility. The exceptions are also much less likely on more expensive products unless you’re planning on exchanging for a similarly priced or more expensive product.

All of this said, the full return policy with all of the fine print does say outright that any return can be refused at the discretion of Best Buy. Two examples of these rare denials:

  1. One of the stores I worked at did not accept returns on items that were over a certain price threshold which were originally purchased from other Best Buy locations. Like buying a 4K TV or an iPhone from another Best Buy and trying to return it at ours.
  2. One customer had a pattern of frequently returning items week after week. After a few weeks, we realized that it was in the store’s best interest to no longer accept returns from them regardless of the risk of losing them as a customer.

Some product categories are non-refundable, such as gift cards, prepaid cards (e.g. iTunes), and opened media/software (unless it’s defective; which they can exchange it for the same title). Other items are subject to a restocking fee if they’re opened and not defective (e.g. cell phones, projectors). The majority of products, however, can be returned open without a fee. Customers are informed of any restocking that applies to a purchase and have to sign an acknowledgment during the transaction.

*The non-mobile restocking fees do not apply in some states or areas where restocking fees are prohibited by the law.

Generally, it is best to return the item as soon as possible. In conclusion, give everything you have of the product cords and all to them for the best chance at an accepted return and be specific as to why your returning said item.

For faster return processing, please bring your receipt or packing slip, the credit card used to make your purchase, and a valid photo ID.
