30 Best Shounen Anime 2020 Ranked. Here are the Best Shounen Anime. Anime covers different genres and audiences. One of its popular forms, shounen anime is a type of anime that focuses on teenage boys, usually between the ages of 12 to 18. It usually has a male hero and combines the elements of action, adventure, and comedy.

1. Naruto (2007-2017)

The series was adapted into a tv series in October 2007 and aired till February 2007. It follows the life of Naruto Uzumaki, a young ninja who is stuck with the spirit of a nine-tailed demon. The series follows his life as a ninja in training with dreams of one day becoming the Hokage (leader) of his village. The sequel to the series Naruto Shippuden was released in 2007 and centers on the life of Naruto as a skilled teenage ninja.

2. Hunter x Hunter (2011-2014)

Gon sets his eyes on attaining the title of “best Hunter in the world” after discovering that his father whom he thought dead is alive and is actually a world-renowned Hunter, a profession comprising of licensed professionals who search for exotic items, places, animals and hidden treasures. But before he can become a licensed hunter, Gon has to pass the  Hunter Examination.

3. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood (2009-2010)

A failed attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy, a science that allows physical matter to be transformed from one form to another leaves two brothers disabled. They both decide to join the military as state alchemists to aid their search for the “Philosopher’s Stone,” an item they believe would help restore their bodies to its original state.

4. My Hero Academia (2016 till date)

In a world where the majority of the population possesses quirks/superpower Izuku is born without superpowers. He is obsessed with superheroes and wishes he too can one day enroll in the hero academy, a high school for people with superpowers.

5. Attack on Titan (2013 till date)

Years after humanity is almost destroyed by gigantic creatures called Titans, Eren’s mother is eaten by a titan. He joins the army so that he can execute vengeance on the titan race by destroying them and saving humanity in the process.

6. One Piece (1999 till date)

The series follows the adventures of Luffy a boy whose body has the unique properties of rubber. He joins the Straw Hat Pirates and together they search for “One Piece,” a treasure belonging to the late pirate king, Gol D. Roger. Luffy intends to defeat other pirates who have their eyes set on the treasure by finding it and then become the next King of Pirates.

7. Death Note (2006-2007)

A high school student, Light Yagami discovers a notebook with mystical abilities. He could use it to kill anyone by writing their names on the book while imagining their faces. Wanting to put the book to good use, Light sets out on the secret task of ridding the world of bad people.

8. The Seven Deadly Sins (2014-2015)

After her father is overthrown and her kingdom falls into the hands of the Holy Knights, princess Elizabeth embarks on a journey to search for the Seven Deadly Sins, a group of knights she believes can help take her kingdom back from the Holy Knights.

9. Bleach (2004-2012)

High school student, Kurosaki Ichigo develops the ability to see ghosts after Rukia, the Death God whose duty is to successfully send good spirits to the afterlife transfers his power to him. Ichigo now has to take on the responsibility of sending spirits to the afterlife and also defend humans from evil spirits.

10. Dragon Ball Z

Zoki and his team, the Z warriors defend the universe from evil invaders. The prequel to the series, Dragon Ball covers Goku’s childhood and early adulthood, the series follows his exploits as an adult warrior while it’s a sequel, Dragon Bell Super chronicles some of the great battles and adventures of  Goku and his crew.

11. Fairy Tail (2009-2019)

Lucy joins the famous wizard guild, Fairy Tail in her quest to fully become a celestial wizard. There she meets Natsu, Gray, and Erza and together they form a bond that helps them as they embark on guild missions that exposes them to dangerous situations.

12. Yu Yu Hakusho (1992-1994)

14-year-old Yusuke dies while trying to save a boy from being hit by a car. He gets a chance at the resurrection and he’s made a spirit detective by Koenma and Botan. Yusuke is appointed the task of investigating demons and other supernatural beings.  While on his mission, Yusuke and his friends, Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei encounter various adventures.

13. Soul Eater (2008-2009)

In order to attain the status of “Death Scythe,” in their high school,  Death Weapon Meister Academy,  six individuals, comprising of 3 duos set out to complete the final task which demands that they collect the souls of ninety-nine humans and one witch which would enable their bodies transform into demon weapons.

14. Noragami ( 2014-2015)

Hiyori is involved in a bus accident while trying to protect someone and this causes her soul to slip out of her body and she has to live in two parallel worlds; one with humans and the other with demons and the souls of humans.  Yato, a deity in need of recognition and worshipers offers to help her and together they embark on numerous adventures.

15. One Punch Man (2015-2019)

Saitama decides to become a superhero and trains really hard to become strong. His dedication pays off and he develops super strength that enables him to defeat his enemies with a punch.  Over time he becomes bored because is no longer challenged by his opponents who he always defeats with a single punch. He joins the Hero Association along with Genos, a cyborg, and together they start a new adventure.

16. Demon Slayer (2016-2020)

After demons kill everyone in his family except his sister, Nezuko who they turn into a demon. Tanjirou joins a group of demon hunters with the hope of eventually being able to turn his sister back to a human.

17. Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic (2013-2014)

While on his quest to capture the dungeon of Amon, Alibaba meets Alladin, magi possessing the mystical power of summoning a mighty blue spirit from a flute. Together, they set out on adventures that would change their lives.

18. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (2013-2013)

The series follows the life of members of the Joestar family, a family gifted with psychic abilities. The series is divided into four parts, each part focusing on certain members of the family at various points in history. The manga written by Hirohiko Araki which this series was adapted from was first released in 1987 and is still on to date.

19. Gintama (2006-2018)

After their country is invaded by alien forces, indigenes including samurais have to take on odd jobs in order to make ends meet. This forces Gintoki and his samurai friends to take on whatever job they can lay their hands on.

20. Tokyo Ghoul (2014)

In a world where ghouls live among humans, they are the same as regular people in virtually every way — other than their craving for human flesh. Shy Ken Kaneki learns that the hard way when he goes on a date with beautiful Rize, who is only interested in him to eat him.
