The Associate Practitioner will support the Occupational Therapists in delivering and overseeing high-quality therapy services within the Children’s Occupational Therapy Service. The role requires service-wide oversight and contribution to the overall quality and consistency of care across the Trust’s geographical area.

This role is for an experienced individual who has a passion for working with children, young people, and their families and has a good knowledge and understanding of child development and the role of Occupational Therapy. This role requires an individual who is dynamic and enjoys working within a team and autonomously. They need to have excellent communication skills and can organise their time effectively. Main duties of the job

  • The successful candidate will support the Children’s Occupational Therapists in all aspects of their work, and in addition to this, they will have their own responsibilities to provide advice and support to children and young people and their families.
  • They will provide intervention as directed by members of the team with service users both in a clinic setting, schools, nurseries, and within the patients’ own homes. There will be an Induction, training, and the opportunity to develop and expand on your existing skills and knowledge.
  • The successful candidates will have regular supervision.
  • The APOT is a key role within the service, and the successful candidate will need to have the skills and knowledge to be able to work with a range of other agencies, e.g., Physiotherapy, Education, Social Care, and other providers within the area and the wider community, as appropriate.
  • The ability to commute within the Trust’s geographical area, with access to an appropriate means of transport, is essential. The successful applicants will have excellent computer skills and engagement skills.

Person Specification

Knowledge

Essential

  • A good understanding of relevant policy, legislation, drivers, and their application to clinical and service areas, e.g., The Children’s Act, Safeguarding
  • Advanced IT skills
  • Knowledge of working in the clinical area
  • Knowledge of child development

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Occupational Therapy
  • Previous experience in working with children and families

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable knowledge/experience of working within children’s services and clinical practice areas

Desirable

  • Experience working in health care setting relevant to the position
  • Experience and knowledge of occupational therapy assessment
  • Experience of working in multi- disciplinary teams

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ III in health or social care or other equivalent relevant qualification/experience, plus significant knowledge and skills development to diploma equivalent level

Skills

Essential

  • Effective communication, interpersonal, organisational, and clinical skills
  • Evidence of engagement with children and families with complex needs
  • Motivated and able to work without direct supervision, prioritising own workload and using own initiative
  • Understanding the limits of the job role and responsibilities
  • able to work as an effective and flexible member of a team

Desirable

  • ability to effectively communicate to a range of professionals and patients/carers
  • ability to work flexibly to respond to specific service need
