Job Summary

Table of Contents

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Respiratory Physiology Department. We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our busy and evolving lung function service as a Clinical Respiratory Physiologist.

The team consists of two Band 7 Physiologists based at Eastbourne District General Hospital and Conquest Hospital, a Band 6 Physiologist, and a Band 5 Spirometry Lead. We are also supported by a team of ARTP-qualified Healthcare Assistants and Physiologists within our spirometry service.

This is a trainee physiology post, primarily based at Bexhill Community Diagnostic Centre. Following appropriate training, the post holder will undertake quality-assured lung function investigations. Once established in the role, there will be opportunities to learn and perform more complex lung function tests to assess patients with a wide range of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary conditions. Further opportunities include involvement in research studies, exercise testing, and sleep physiology.

Previous experience in lung function testing, such as spirometry, would be advantageous but is not essential. Comprehensive in-house training will be provided, with an expectation that the successful candidate will work towards completing the ARTP Associate Examination (Level I) to support progression to a Band 5 post.

This post also offers an Annex 21 training opportunity, with the successful applicant progressing to a Band 5 Clinical Respiratory Physiologist position upon successful completion of the required competencies.

Main duties of the job

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with an interest in clinical and respiratory physiology, and we welcome candidates looking to develop a career in clinical physiology.

The role will involve cross-site working between our laboratories (Bexhill Community Diagnostics Centre, Eastbourne DGH, and Conquest Hospital), although the Community Diagnostic Centre will be the predominant site. This is an exciting time to be joining the service as we continue expanding our workforce, laboratories, and services.

The role of the Clinical Respiratory Physiologist is to provide a high-quality, patient-focused Respiratory Physiology service.

The main duties of the role are the performance of lung function tests, which will include working in our physiology lab, GP direct access spirometry service, and the new breathlessness pathway at the Community Diagnostic Centre. This role will also include setting up, calibrating, and maintaining diagnostic equipment, ensuring quality control, and you will be required to produce accurate investigation reports and technical comments. Good IT skills and excellent communication skills are essential. Performance of basic and advanced pulmonary function testing is required. It is expected that you will work towards gaining a professional qualification from the ARTP (ARTP Associate Examination (Level I).
