United States passports are passports issued to citizens and nationals of the United States of America.

Generally, most people tend to dread the process of applying for a passport but this process need not be a herculean task if one knows the exact step and has all the required documents at hand. The processes involved in getting a passport are discussed below:

To be eligible for a passport in the United States of America, one needs to be an American citizen by birth, naturalization, or be a United States national. Becoming a citizen by naturalization is the process by which a non- U.S citizen voluntarily decides to become an American citizen. This person must have had a permanent resident(Green) card for at least five years, be at least 18 years of age, be able to write and speak English, and must have passed the naturalization test.

How to Apply for US Passports

The application process requires an in-person application and the passport can be obtained in three weeks or less for an expedited process and in more than three weeks for the regular process. For an expedited passport the following steps are required:

  • Place a call to the 24-hour automated appointment system at 1-877-487-2778 or
  • Utilization of the United State Department’s online passport appointment system. The application can then be submitted in person at the passport agency appointment.

The expedited passport costs an extra $60 in addition to the routine cost.

For a routine/regular passport, the application can be made at an acceptance facility or renewed by mail. To renew by mail the following steps are required:

  • Fill out the form DS-82
  • Submit most recent passport
  • Include name change document(if applicable)
  • Provide a standard photo
  • Calculate fees
  • The completed application should be mailed back to the National Passport Processing Center using United States Postal Service (USPS).

Cost of US Passports

The cost for getting a new passport or renewing a passport depends on if expedited or routine service is required or if a passport card or passport book is to be obtained.

A passport card can be used for land and sea borders while a passport book is required for all international travel by air. Both the application and execution fee is non-refundable.

The application fee is to be paid to the U.S. Department of State while the execution fee is to be paid to the acceptance facility. The passport fees are shown in the table below:
