We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Blood Transfusion and Haematology to join our friendly, supportive team at the George Eliot Hospital site. The laboratory is part of the Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Service and serves as the hub laboratory for Blood Sciences processing samples from GP surgeries and outpatient clinics across Coventry and Warwickshire, along with the acute hospital work from George Eliot.

To apply, you must be HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist and have completed an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology and Blood Transfusion or equivalent. You must have experience working as a band 5 in Blood Transfusion and Haematology in an NHS laboratory. The successful candidate must be willing to manage a busy workload, be forward-thinking and keen to develop new skills. You must have good communication skills, be able to work successfully as part of a team and be able to work on your own initiative. Training and supervision of staff are part of this role.

Participation in the 24/7 shift rota is expected of the successful candidate.

Trainee band 6 will be considered on a training contract as a band 5 until completion of specialist portfolio.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Pathology, the post holder is responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service analysing and reporting on blood samples. Duties include:

  • Validation of Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion Results
  • Issue of blood components
  • Training staff
  • Supervising sections of the department
  • Performing specialist testing
  • Quality management

Person Specification

Qualification

Essential

  • Biomedical Science degree acceptable to the HCPC or equivalent qualification
  • Current registration with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist.
  • Commitment to work towards completion of the IBMS Specialist Diploma.
  • Evidence of CPD.

Experience

Essential

  • Post registration and NHS experience.

Desirable

  • Evidence of recent laboratory experience.
  • Evidence of problem solving/troubleshooting

Knowledge

Essential

  • Demonstrate a broad-based knowledge in Pathology in required discipline.

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Be able to speak, receive and issue instructions without risk of misunderstanding.
  • Be able to follow complex documents such as a standard operating procedure.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • IT and keyboard skills.
