We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, self-motivated, and experienced Sonographer to support sonography training at Mile End Hospital in this newly created post. The successful candidate will work closely with the Ultrasound Lead Sonographer and Modality Lead Sonographers to ensure the ultrasound service runs smoothly, with staff working at the top of their licence.
The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be committed to providing and developing a high-quality ultrasound training programme at the Mile End Community Diagnostic Service.
The successful candidate will work closely with the other lead Sonographers across the trust and should be able to offer a flexible approach to work. They should have a desire to teach others, have good organisational skills, and demonstrate the ability to prioritise their workload and liaise with other departments. Statutory registration with a regulatory body and DMU or Post Graduate Cert / Diploma in Medical Ultrasound is essential.
This post will be based at the Mile End site, where the post holder will coordinate and deliver training of student sonographers and upskilling of sonographers, radiologists, or other professionals across Mile End, Royal London, and St Barts sites. Developing advanced clinical pathways and improving skill mix will be a core element of this post.
Main duties of the job
- The post holder will be an experienced autonomous ultrasound practitioner providing both clinical and academic leadership within the Mile End Hospital Community Diagnostic Centre.
- The role involves working closely with the site lead and education lead sonographers to deliver and oversee training for students, radiologists, and sonographers requiring upskilling, including inductions, one-to-one supervision, and continuous monitoring of academic and clinical progress in line with CASE-accredited programmes. They will support trainee supervisors with action planning and assessments while ensuring high-quality education standards are maintained across all sites.
- The post holder will undertake 70% clinical duties, independently performing and reporting ultrasound examinations, alongside 30% administrative responsibilities, including coordinating trainee placements across CDC, RLH, and SBH, and acting as a key liaison with universities and education providers.
- Additionally, they will contribute to the development of a skilled and innovative ultrasound workforce, standardise training programmes and clinical protocols, support quality assurance processes, and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centred imaging services in line with local and national standards.
