The Department of Dermatology at Homerton University Hospital provides a full range of general and specialist dermatology clinics. The demand for these clinics has increased and the Trust wishes to further expand on the range of specialist clinics available.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified physicians for the substantive post of Consultant in Dermatology.

The post is offered flexibly at 4-10 Programmed Activities (0.4-1.0 WTE). Applicants are explicitly invited to apply for any contractual commitment within this range. The final job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate according to their contracted PAs, clinical interests and service requirements, within the agreed DCC and SPA framework. During normal working hours, the consultant team provides support for acute dermatology and urgent inpatient referrals. There is currently no fixed General Medical on-call commitment; however, the future provision of an out-of-hours/on-call dermatology service is under active discussion and may be implemented as service requirements develop.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a comprehensive Dermatology service in collaboration with consultant colleagues, including inpatient and outpatient care, referrals, treatment, and telephone/electronic Advice & Guidance to local GPs.
  • Undertake adult dermatology outpatient clinics, with paediatric clinics incorporated where appropriate to applicant interest and service need.
  • Participate in skin cancer services, including outpatient clinics and MDT meetings where required, with clinical commitments adjusted accordingly.
  • Provide timely assessment and management of inpatient, urgent and acute dermatology referrals.
  • Share responsibility for delivering evidence-based standards of care and maintain continuing responsibility for patients under your care, including associated administrative duties.
  • Liaise effectively with GPs, external agencies and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Provide leadership, clinical supervision and support to junior doctors and dermatology nursing staff.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate dermatology education.
  • Participate in future out-of-hours/on-call dermatology arrangements if introduced, subject to appropriate job planning and contractual arrangements.
  • Work in accordance with Trust policies, procedures, the Code of Behaviour, contractual requirements and Homerton’s business plans.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • On GMC’s specialist register relevant to the post or a Specialist Registrar who is within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC’s specialist register by date of interview MRCP (or equivalent). Highest level of Child Protection training

Relevant experience

Essential

  • Experience in Adult and paediatric Dermatology. Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent).

Desirable

  • Experience/interest in a specialist area e.g. hair

Clinical skills

Essential

  • Competence across whole UK dermatology curriculum.

Leadership and professionalism

Essential

  • Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service need.

Desirable

  • Familiar with current structure of the health service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes

Management skills

Essential

  • Awareness of the overall business environment in which the hospital operates. Understanding of the importance of good clinical coding

Desirable

  • Management of team or programme or project

Teaching & training

Essential

  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching

Desirable

  • Experience of educational supervision, teaching skills course/ qualification

Clinical Governance

Essential

  • Evidence of contribution to effective audit and clinical risk management

Communication skills

Essential

  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligence in written and spoken English IT skills and computer literacy

Desirable

  • Computer skills course/certificate

Research

Essential

  • Understanding of principles and application of clinical research

Desirable

  • Relevant research experience Publication of peer reviewed papers
