Job summary

We are recruiting for a full-time Consultant Psychiatrist to join Salisbury Community CAMHS and work with a well-established multi-disciplinary team at Salisbury District hospital.

You’ll provide psychiatric clinical input and leadership within a recently redesigned service delivering targeted mental health care to children and young people with severe and enduring mental health needs through our Getting More Help pathway.

You’ll work in partnership within the multidisciplinary team for the clinical management of patients. This will include risk assessment, the assessment of the needs of carers, and the development of services to meet the needs of patients and families for whom the team is responsible.

You’ll work 10 programmed activities with a job plan typically comprising 75% direct clinical care and 25% supporting professional activities, in line with Royal College of Psychiatrists’ guidance. Opportunities are available to develop interests in service development, quality improvement, and teaching and training within a well-established, supportive multidisciplinary team and consultant peer group.

Main duties of the job

• Provide clinical leadership and medical input to the team
• Responsibility for those patients you see yourself, together with those patients seen by medical staff directly supervised by you
• With other consultants in the team, have responsibility for the clinical governance of the team as clinical leads for the team
• The team will assess all emergencies referred to it within a day of referral. When necessary, this will include responsibility for Mental Health Act assessment of patients. The Consultant is not expected to make initial assessments, except in certain circumstances. The Consultant psychiatrists will work in partnership within the multidisciplinary team for the clinical management of patients in relation to the Trust Key working model. This will include risk assessment, the assessment of the needs of carers, and the development of services to meet the needs of patients and families for whom the team is responsible.
• Be a clinical leaders in your team and ensure excellent systems of clinical governance so that their team provides high-quality, safe care to patients. Consultants are expected to encourage a Restorative Just and Learning Culture of Learning, participate in safety huddles and investigations and participate in identifying improvements in practice where appropriate.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Registration

Essential

• Medical degree
• Full GMC registration
• Eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register (or Specialist Registrar within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview)
• Eligible for Section 12 Approval (Mental Health Act)/ Approved Clinician or willing to apply for such approval once in post

Desirable

• MSc or higher degree
• Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)

Experience

Essential

• Experience of clinical work in specialty at SpR, SAS/Specialist grade or consultant level within the last 3 years
• Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act
• Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices

Desirable

• Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health
• Experience of working at consultant level in an inpatient environment

• Commitment to fostering a culture in the team that is respectful, fair, supportive and compassionate and role modelling these behaviours
• Ability to manage complex workloads and support others to do that
• Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
