Nintendo began its journey back in 1889 when craftsman Fusajiro Yamauchi created handmade hanafuda playing cards. A humble deck of playing cards evolved into a world-class gaming platform we will never forget. But what is it about Nintendo that has fans, young and old, mesmerized and going back for more? Is it those specific games for Nintendo fans like Mario Brothers or The Legend of Zelda? Or is it nostalgia? Whatever the case may be, Nintendo is very much still in the game, and we’ve got the reasons why.

A brief history

Once Fusajiro Yamauchi created the playing cards in 1889, the company slowly took off with its first western-style cards entering the market in 1902. By the 30s, Nintendo was expanding and diversifying, which led to a contract with Walt Disney in 1959 to incorporate the company’s animated characters into cards. It wasn’t until the 1970s that Nintendo released its first electronic toys. Japan’s first electronic toy, the Nintendo Beam Gun sold over a million units. But the growing demand for Nintendo’s products would soon go into overdrive with the release of the first of its kind console, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), which was released on July 15, 1983. The NES was highly popular as it featured ALL the Nintendo classics we still play today. Now let’s look at why we still love Nintendo.

Innovation is always a priority

Nintendo is always pushing the envelope when it comes to innovation. While other major console brands like Sony and Microsoft are solely focused on their technology, Nintendo’s mission is to ensure its hardware is consistently updated to please its users. Nintendo sticks to their formula of controller-in-hands and they do this well. While it might seem as though focusing on the console instead of the technology might not be an innovative idea, it’s been proven that it works. If we look at the Wii which launched in 2006, it sold over 100 million units worldwide and is one of Nintendo’s most successful consoles of all time. It’s only beaten by the Nintendo DS, an equally amazing device, even though it’s handheld. The consoles also come with incredible controllers and add-on tools. With the Wii, you could play virtual sports like tennis using an actual Wii tennis racket.

Best in the business: handheld games

Nintendo pretty much owns this market with their insane handheld consoles, and they’ve been owning this market pretty much for the last three decades. However, Sony’s PlayStation Portable ranks pretty high up with the likes of Nintendo’s handheld consoles. Nintendo’s 3DS sold over 75 million units but its successor the DS proved to be the most popular handheld gaming console of all time with over 150 million units sold. Why was the DS so good? There are various parts to it, firstly, the DS offered some weird and wonderful games to people who would otherwise not consider themselves gamers. Secondly, its stylus interface was an integral part of its marketing and because the DS was released in 2004, stylus pens were the range back then so if your device’s stylus worked properly, you had an advantage in the market. The company’s most recent successful handheld console, the Switch, is on an upward trajectory with no end in sight. You can play all those cool games from your childhood!

Everyone likes it

Overall, Nintendo’s consoles and games were designed to be enjoyed by ALL people making them fun for all ages and the Switch is by far the most family-friendly console around today. What Nintendo also does is not only focus on one age group but rather ensure their games have a broader appeal so that people of all ages can enjoy them.

Iconic gaming titles

Millennials and Gen Xers were truly spoiled for choice with this brand of gaming titles. Games such as The Legend of Zelda, Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong, Pokémon, Super Smash Bros, Animal Cross, and more! There are so many titles we played as kids that have been reimagined for the world today and they are fantastic. The brand is also very smart in this regard since you can only play those classic titles on its consoles. We believe if Nintendo keeps it this way, it will remain one of the best gaming franchises in history.
