Table of Contents
- Provide therapeutic play to children and young people receiving hospital care.
- Carry out therapeutic assessments and develop individual play programmes based on each child’s needs.
- Prepare children for invasive and non-invasive medical procedures through therapeutic play.
- Use distraction therapy to reduce anxiety and distress during procedures.
- Provide post-procedure therapeutic play to support recovery and emotional wellbeing.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of play interventions.
- Work closely with the wider multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Support children and families affected by hospitalisation.
- Potentially develop play support for sibling donors, palliative-care discussions and bereavement support.
- Work Monday–Friday, with occasional weekends and bank holidays.
Requirements
Essential:
- FdA Health Care Play Specialism, equivalent previous qualification (HPSC/HPSEB), or Child Life Specialist qualification.
- Registration with the Society of Health Play Specialists (SoHPS) or certification as a Child Life Specialist (CCLS).
- Basic secondary education including English and Maths.
- Knowledge of therapeutic play and child development.
- Understanding of the impact of hospitalisation on children, young people and families.
- Knowledge of the value of play for sick children.
- Understanding of relevant health legislation, professional guidelines and confidentiality.
- Ability to plan and deliver play preparation, distraction therapy and post-procedure play.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Good organisation and documentation skills.
- Ability to work creatively with individual children and groups/adolescents.
- Ability to work flexibly within a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to reflect critically on your own practice and maintain professional boundaries.
- Awareness of health, safety and risk.
- Appropriate UK professional registration is required.
Desirable:
- NVQ/CACHE/NNEB Level 3 in Child Care/Play Work.
- Diploma in Children and Young People’s Workforce or degree in Early Childhood Studies.
- Knowledge of clinical governance and professional codes of conduct.
- Presentation and IT skills.
