The Trust is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist for the Adult In-patient Eating Disorders Ward, Avalon Ward, Springfield University Hospital. This is an established postThe vacancy has arisen as a result of the current postholder relocating.

This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic and dynamic consultant psychiatrist to join this well-established in-patient eating disorders unit, with a well-functioning MDT and good national and international reputation.

Main duties of the job

The Adult Eating Disorder services comprise the following: inpatient unit – Avalon ward, outpatient service and day unit. All are located in a new, state-of-the-art Trinity building.

The Trust operates as part of the South London Partnership (SLP) – a collaboration between the 3 trusts providing Mental health services for the 12 Boroughs of South London (South London and Maudsley [SLaM], OXLEAS and this Trust, South West London & St. George’s MH Trust). The SLP has an excellent reputation locally and nationally in the context of innovation and good quality, patient-centred care for the population of South London.

Avalon Ward is an 18-bed ward, providing care for local and national patients, mostly from Surrey, Sussex and Kent, with eating disorders requiring inpatient treatment. The service accepts patients aged 18 who cannot be supported effectively in the community. Decisions about admissions are made jointly with our partner in the Provider Collaborative (SLAM) in the Single Point of Referrals.

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS:

Essential

  • Primary Medical degree
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCPsych, or equivalent
  • General Adult Psychiatry or eligible for such inclusion on the Specialist Registrar within three months of completing their CCT
  • Section 12 (2) approval of the Mental Health Act

Desirable

  • Talking therapy such as CBT, DBT or MBT
  • Management and service development skills

KNOWLEDGE: & EXPERIENCE: Critical Expertise in Specialty

Essential

  • Completed minimum of three years full-time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme
  • A detailed knowledge of main treatment approaches for severe mental illness

Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience of the CPA process, risk assessment and risk management
  • Experience of teaching medical and non-medical staff, including those who may not have a formal qualification
  • Previous experience of managing patients with Eating Disorders.

AUDIT AND MANAGEMENT

Essential

  • Commitment to developing practice through clinical audit and/or research
  • Commitment to working with allied agencies including carers’ groups, and local charities.

Desirable

  • Experience of service planning and development
  • Experience of working with third sector partners

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS:

Essential

  • Evidence of participation in research, and outcomes of studies

Desirable

  • Higher degree in research. Completion of a research project and evidence of it’s dissemination
  • Publication in a peer-reviewed journal

TEACHING

Essential

  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry

Desirable

  • Teaching Qualification
  • Evidence of good feedback from students
