Job Summary

As a Children with Disabilities Social Worker, you will play a vital role in supporting children and young people with physical, learning, sensory, or developmental disabilities, along with their families. Your work focuses on promoting the well-being, safety, and rights of children, ensuring they have access to appropriate care, education, and social opportunities.

You will assess individual needs, develop care plans, coordinate multi-agency support, and advocate for services that enhance quality of life. This role requires empathy, resilience, and a strong understanding of safeguarding, disability legislation, and child development. You’ll work closely with schools, health professionals, and voluntary organisations to create inclusive environments where children can thrive.

Main duties of the job

  • Assessment and Care Planning
    • Conduct comprehensive assessments of children’s needs, strengths, and risks.
    • Develop and review individual care and support plans in collaboration with families and professionals
  • Safeguarding and Protection
    • Identify and respond to safeguarding concerns.
    • Participate in child protection conferences, strategy meetings, and court proceedings when necessary.
  • Advocacy and Support
    • Advocate for the rights and needs of children with disabilities.
    • Support families in accessing services such as education, health care, respite care, and financial assistance.
  • Multi-Agency Collaboration
    • Work closely with schools, health professionals, voluntary organisations, and other agencies.
    • Coordinate services to ensure a holistic and integrated approach to care.
  • Monitoring and Review
    • Regularly monitor the child’s progress and well-being.
    • Update care plans and ensure services remain appropriate and effective.
  • Record Keeping and Reporting
    • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records.
    • Prepare reports for internal use and external bodies, including courts and review panels.
  • Promoting Inclusion
    • Encourage participation in community and educational activities.
    • Support transitions, such as moving from child to adult services.
  • Professional Development
    • Stay informed about legislation, policy, and best practices.
    • Participate in supervision, training, and reflective practice.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Social Work qualification e.g., Degree in Social Work; DipSW or equivalent.
  • Be registered with Social Work England and evidence this.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Required to undertake the practice educator award

Desirable

  • Relevant post-qualifying/vocational training courses.

Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

  • Able to demonstrate practice which supports the core principles of the College of Social Work and Families and Wellbeing Directorate.
  • Knowledge of legislation relevant to the Service Area, e.g., Children Act, Children and Families Act, Children and Social Work Act, Safeguarding
  • Understanding of confidentiality and data protection requirements.
  • Able to communicate verbally and in writing with a range of people, including families and professionals.
  • Able to demonstrate organisational skills.
  • Awareness of current practice issues and challenges facing Social Workers
  • Commitment to anti-discriminatory practice.
  • Able to work with individuals, families, carers/carer groups, irrespective of their circumstances and background.
  • Must be willing to move across teams according to the needs of the service.
  • An understanding of and an ability to deliver excellent customer service and to work in partnership with individuals, families, carers/carer groups, colleagues in the council, and partner agencies.
  • Sound assessment and interviewing skills.
  • Demonstrate appropriate IT skills, e.g., use of Microsoft Office, etc

  • Exercise emotional intelligence and demonstrate a developing emotional resilience in relation to their job role.

Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience of working with carers.
  • Experience of working with vulnerable individuals and families.
  • Experience of arranging support plans and/or packages of care.
  • Experience of working with partner agencies in a professional capacity.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with carers and families.
  • Experience of arranging packages of care.
  • Experience of working in a Local Authority setting.
  • Working in a multi-agency team.
  • Experience of working with a range of families with different issues and needs.
