Job Summary

Table of Contents

This is an exciting opportunity to take a senior, hands-on data science role within a new enterprise data science function.

As a Senior Clinical Data Scientist, the post-holder owns the full health data science lifecycle from problem to solution, delivering pilots that aim to produce measurable improvements in clinical and operational KPIs.

Main duties of the job

  • Take individual delivery ownership of data science pilots across the full lifecycle – problem definition, diagnosis, solution design, experimentation, implementation support, and outcome measurement – working autonomously and accountable for movement in target KPIs
  • Apply modern machine learning, statistical, causal inference, and experimental methods to clinical and operational problems, recognising that a model is one option among several, not the default
  • Act as a domain expert, using a clinical background to frame real-world clinical and operational problems and to validate that outputs are clinically and operationally meaningful
  • Work with the data and software engineering team to productionise pilots and to monitor the impact and safety of deployed decision-support tools
  • Take the analytical lead on highly complex and contentious healthcare data, devising methods, setting data-quality and performance KPIs, and making evidence-based recommendations to stakeholders
  • Engage and influence clinical, operational, and technical stakeholders, and support more junior analysts and data scientists through mentoring and capability-building

Person Specification

Background

Essential

  • Clinical qualification (e.g. medicine, nursing, pharmacy) or clinical background, with an understanding of clinical and operational care pathways
  • Strong healthcare / clinical domain knowledge, with the ability to frame real-world clinical and operational problems for data science
  • Degree in a data science, statistics, computer science, machine learning, health informatics, or related quantitative field (or equivalent experience)

Desirable

  • PhD in a data-science related field

Technical

Essential

  • Hands-on expertise in Python and SQL, and in modern machine learning and statistical methods, including causal inference techniques and experimental methods (e.g. A/B testing, stepped-wedge designs)
  • Experience of delivering across the data science lifecycle, from problem definition and experimentation through to implementation support and outcome measurement

Desirable

  • Experience delivering data science solutions in an industry setting
  • Experience building and deploying solutions on cloud data platforms (e.g. Snowflake, Databricks)
  • Experience working with LLMs and/or modern generative AI in applied settings

General

Essential

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to translate between technical, clinical, and operational audiences
  • Excellent project and delivery management skills

Desirable

  • Familiarity with agile and product methodologies for managing technical workstreams
  • Track record of high-impact research output and/or peer-reviewed publication
