Main duties of the job

The core purpose of this role is to deliver high-quality,woman-centred midwifery care throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal journey.

You will work closely with colleagues across both hospital and community settings to ensure every woman and her family receives safe, personalised and compassionate care. You will play an active role in supporting the learning and development of others–sharing professional knowledge, contributing to training, and acting as a positive role model for student midwives and members of the wider multi-disciplinary team.

Participate in the maternity unit on-call rota to support periods of increased activity and service escalation, including on-call provision for the homebirth service, with appropriate supervision and role-specific training. You will uphold the principles of the NHS Constitution and maintain an up-to-date understanding of NHS England’s Understanding the New NHS guidance, the current Midwifery Agenda, and all relevant national and local policies.

Essential

  • Able to demonstrate wide knowledge of health policy and application to practice
  • Good knowledge base regarding clinical information systems and the appropriate application of IT to clinical practice
  • Knowledge of current local and national midwifery agenda and priorities
  • Knowledge of the NHS Constitution & ‘Understanding the New NHS’, demonstrating professional attitude and behaviours as required by the NMC Code of Conduct (NMC 2019)

Desirable

  • Demonstrates an awareness of care bundles e.g. Saving Babies Lives VS3 and OASI

Skills

Essential

  • Able to demonstrate evidence of team working
  • Ability to work well under pressure and demonstrate resilience
  • Recognise and value the contribution of others within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Competent in the use of IT and computer skills, word processing and report writing
  • Extended midwifery skills e.g. cannulation, suturing
  • Evidence of skills in decision making, diplomacy and negotiation and conflict resolution
  • Ability to prioritise workload and multi-task, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability
  • Evidence of excellent record keeping

Desirable

  • Competent in the use of databases and spreadsheets including electronic patient records

Qualifications

Essential

  • Newly registered Midwife/ newly registered midwife graduated within the last 12 months and has NMC PIN seeking first post as a midwife preceptor/ midwife due to qualify in 2026 awaiting PIN Relevant BSc (Hons) Midwifery or equivalent (Hons) Degree <12 months/ will complete Relevant BSc (Hons) Midwifery or equivalent (Hons) Degree in 2026

Desirable

  • Emergency course e.g. ALSO/MOET/NLS
  • Mentorship/ Leadership/ Teaching qualification/ Teaching or presentation skills
  • NIPE accreditation or willingness to work towards

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of awareness of evidence-based best practice approaches to management of emergency situations
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Evidence of learning and development in line with NMC Revalidation requirements

Desirable

  • Knowledge of risk management and clinical governance
  • Evidence of research-based practice
  • Research, Audit and QI experience
