This role centres on being a highly visible presence within Specialist Services, working directly with ward staff teams to uphold and promote exemplary standards of practice. Key responsibilities include actively maintaining and enhancing personal knowledge and skills through continuous professional development (CPD), and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to foster an environment of shared, practice-based learning. The role requires supporting staff in managing challenging behaviours associated with severe mental health conditions, utilising CPD to contribute towards departmental development, and assisting the Clinical Nurse Manager.

In partnership with the Physical Health Lead Nurse, you are responsible for creating, delivering, and maintaining internal physical health training materials. The role emphasises promoting research awareness and evidence-based care, including active involvement in ward-based quality improvement (QI) projects and ‘Brilliant Basics’ initiatives. Duties also entail collecting and collating audit data, completing designated audits, providing feedback, and ensuring annual updates of audit topics.

Adherence to Health and Safety protocols, fire regulations, and security policies is fundamental. You play a part in stock management tasks such as stock handling, ordering, and inventory checks, while also providing administrative support to both the Physical Health Team and Specialist Services.

Main duties of the job

The Physical Health and Wellbeing Support Worker is a key member of the specialist physical health team, delivering care across admission, rehabilitation, pre-discharge and outreach services within NLFT Specialist Services. The role supports holistic physical health care within a range of settings, including secure mental health wards, eating disorder services, CAMHS, and prison healthcare.

The post holder contributes to staff education and development, supporting practice educators to deliver training and promote evidence-based practice across multidisciplinary teams. They work collaboratively with staff, patients and stakeholders to improve access to physical health interventions and health promotion, in line with national guidance.

Responsibilities include supporting patient engagement, facilitating therapeutic and educational activities, participating in audit and quality improvement, and maintaining high standards of care. The role requires adaptability to dynamic environments, effective team working, and the ability to work both independently and under supervision.

Overall, the post focuses on promoting physical health within mental health services, improving outcomes for individuals with severe and enduring mental illness, and supporting recovery within secure and diverse clinical settings.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • – NVQ Level 3 or equivalent experience/training
  • – Mandatory training (Breakaway/PMCB, BLS/ILS, infection control, safeguarding)

Desirable

  • Ability to: Undertake simple assessments and activity planning, Evaluate and adapt therapeutic interventions. Teach or support staff development programmes
  • – ECG, phlebotomy, sexual health training – POCT / Clozapine knowledge
