We are now seeking an exceptional Deputy Chief Executive to join our leadership team in a rare opportunity to step into a broad and significant leadership position, with the ability to shape the future direction of DBTH and our wider systems in both South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. Regularly deputising for our Chief Executive, you will work with the board to deliver our vision: Healthier Together – delivering exceptional healthcare for all, leading a broad portfolio including strategy, transformation, improvement, partnerships, and place-based working.

We are seeking an exceptional executive leader with significant experience at board level and a track record of strategic leadership, performance improvement, and organisational change gained within complex NHS environments. Politically astute, inclusive and highly collaborative, you will quickly build trusted relationships across organisational and system boundaries. You will be comfortable leading through complexity and ambiguity, with the personal credibility, authenticity, and influence to inspire confidence in our workforce, our board and our partners. Above all, you will be passionate about improving outcomes for patients, reducing health inequalities and will role model the DBTH Way as we strive to realise our vision for the future.

Main duties of the job

Comfortable in leading at system level, you will work with partners across our two ICBs to strengthen our contribution as an anchor institution, to the neighbourhood agenda and to our provider collaboratives. Internally you will provide visible leadership and empower colleagues to accelerate the modernisation of our services; improving outcomes and reducing health inequalities for our communities.

You will be a voting Executive Director on the Board, responsible for working with the CEO, Executive team and Senior Leadership Team to develop the Trust’s strategy and plans, as well as making sure that effective performance management systems are in place to ensure that the associated goals and objectives are delivered. Together with the CEO, you will work closely with the South Yorkshire and Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Systems (ICS), Doncaster and Bassetlaw Places, South Yorkshire Acute Federation and Nottinghamshire Collaborative colleagues to deliver the ICS, Place and Partnership Strategies. Contributing to the development and implementation of robust plans to achieve this across the local health and care systems.

Specifically, the Deputy CEO will be the lead Executive for strategic planning and Partnerships, and the lead Executive Director for Corporate Governance, with oversight of corporate risk management processes and ensuring effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience and successful track record at Board level in an NHS organisation, with senior level experience in an NHS provider
  • Demonstrable success in leading and delivering change and performance, with and through leadership, operational and clinical teams, by engaging them in strategic direction and delivery plans establishing clear work priorities with them, delegating effectively, ensuring capability to deliver
  • Significant experience of working collaboratively and building effective working relationships with system partners and stakeholders, to deliver service transformation, organisational change and improvements
  • Experience of effectively building and managing regulatory relationships
  • Experience in and understanding of working within a regulatory framework, and in collaboration with regulators
  • Track record of successfully leading transformation and change in a variety of project/programme environment at a senior level, ensuring engagement from key stakeholders
  • A record of successful workforce, financial and resource management, ensuring high performance and holding individuals and teams to account

Desirable

  • Experience of leading Place-based integration working closely with Integrated Care System networks
  • Board or senior level experience in an acute NHS provider setting

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • Graduate level qualification / training in relevant areas
  • Master’s Level education or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continuous professional development

Desirable

  • A Postgraduate leadership, management qualification or substantial relevant experience at senior level
  • Project management qualifications or relevant experience at a senior level

  • Effective and strategic influencing skills at all levels in the organisation including Trust Board
  • Strategic thinker with highly developed influencing and negotiation skills and using them to bring about change and develop services, standards and systems
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative working skills and ability to build strong relationships with clinical leaders and professional groups
  • Evidence of formulating long term strategic plans which have an impact across the organisation and in the wider Place/system
  • Evidence of consistently working in a matrix structure where resource may not be under direct control to achieve results and targets
  • Intellectual flexibility and agility, with ability to think conceptually, recognise assumptions and evaluate arguments
  • Understanding of the NHS, its infrastructure and partners organisations, and politically astute with ability to deal with a complex and sensitive issues in a demanding stakeholder environment
  • Role model for our Trust values and the DBTH Way.
