Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit hard-working, self-motivated and inspiring doctors to join our team of 29 Intensive Care consultants at the City & Weston Hospital Operating Unit.

Our newly created Trust has an annual turnover of £2.6 billion and is one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK. The City & Weston ICU bed base comprises 60 beds in 6 discrete clinical areas across the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Weston General Hospital sites. We admit more than 3000 patients a year. Our severity of illness and outcomes are consistently well above the national average based on serial ICNARC data.

Main duties of the job

Recent developments within our ICU include the medical merger of the General, Cardiac and Weston adult critical care services. The unit was commissioned as an ECMO / Severe Acute Respiratory Failure (SARF) centre in 2022. We have a multidisciplinary Critical Care Outreach service on both the Bristol and Weston General Hospital sites.

You need to have a CCT (or equivalent) in Intensive Care Medicine (or within six months of your CCT date on the day of interview) and have GMC registration with a licence to practice. This is a substantive post with full-time ICM PAs available. Both full-time and less than full-time working can be accommodated within the Consultant rota structure. For suitably qualified individuals, additional DCC PAs may also be available from the regional Retrieve transfer service, as well as other departments such as Anaesthesia and Acute Medicine.

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • Full GMC registration
  • FCICM or equivalent qualification
  • CCT in Intensive Care Medicine (or equivalent) or within 6 months of the interview date (please note, this does not apply to CESR)

Desirable

  • Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • Stage 3/Advanced Training in Intensive Care (or equivalent)
  • Offers expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in critical care
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care without direct supervision
  • Experience of caring for patients post cardiac surgery

Desirable

  • Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust’s service strategy
  • Experience in delivery of ECMO

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Up-to-date knowledge and experience of relevant specialty
  • Knowledge of NHS priorities with reference to specialty

Desirable

  • Broad range of IT skills
  • Clinical skills and knowledge related to ECMO
  • Use of point of care ultrasound techniques

Clinical Governance and Audit

Essential

  • Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation
  • Positive approach to evidence-based practice
  • Evidence of recent and regular engagement with a continuing professional development (CPD) scheme

Research

Essential

  • Knowledge of the principles involved in research
  • Evidence of involvement in research
  • Applies research outcomes to clinical problems in critically-ill patients and appraises the published evidence

Desirable

  • Additional academic experience and qualifications e.g. PhD
  • Formal academic activities, e.g. publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Participation in recruitment to large trials in Intensive Care

Teaching and Training

Essential

  • Teaching experience relevant to Intensive Care and the multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of supervising trainees

Desirable

  • Formal teaching/ education qualification
  • Educational Supervisor training completed
  • Contribution to learning through simulation

Management & Leadership

Essential

  • Evidence of management training and evidence of learning from it
  • Ability to organise efficient and smooth running of a specialist service
  • Ability to cope with and effectively organise the workload of a consultant
  • Ability to practice independently as a consultant
  • Ability to take on responsibility and show evidence of leadership
  • Ability to work under pressure and cope with setbacks

Desirable

  • Evidence of management/leadership experience and/or qualifications and courses
