The Radiotherapy Physics Group at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) is looking for a Registered Radiotherapy Clinical Scientist to join our team.

NCCC runs services at both the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle, and the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, and provides a highly specialised clinical service for the treatment of cancer patients. The successful candidate will be based primarily at the Freeman Hospital but will be required to work occasionally in the Carlisle site.

Main duties of the job

As the successful candidate, you will contribute to the whole range of our radiotherapy physics clinical and scientific services, including planning, imaging, radiation dosimetry, quality assurance, radiobiology, radiation protection, and teaching, as well as service development and research projects. You will play a significant role in ensuring that patients receive optimised and timely radiotherapy. You will be expected to lead projects, and proven experience in taking projects from inception to completion will be an advantage. You will advise, supervise, and train a range of other staff groups in areas in which you specialise.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential

  • Honours Degree in an appropriate physical science, to a minimum of Second Class
  • Appropriate post-graduate degree at master’s level, or equivalent level of specialist knowledge and experience
  • The post holder is expected to be a registered Clinical Scientist (HCPC) or be on a pathway where registration is expected in less than 6 months following the agreed start date

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance issues, including ethical and regulatory considerations
  • Extensive and up-to-date knowledge of radiation physics applied to radiotherapy
  • Good knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, and radiation physics applied to radiotherapy
  • Good knowledge & experience of scientific method, data collection, and analysis of data using standard tools and software
  • Knowledge of scientific theory, legislation, standards, guidance, and safety principles relevant to the working area
  • Good understanding of equipment and process QA, advanced treatment planning, and imaging in radiotherapy development

Desirable

  • Experience of performing, publishing & presenting research
  • Experience of preparing grant applications
  • Good publication record of research in peer-reviewed journal papers

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to interpret complex technical information and undertake complex calculations and data analysis
  • Good written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent teamwork skills and the ability to work independently
  • Good IT skills, appropriate for scientific analysis and presentation of data
  • Teaching, training, and mentoring skills
  • Experience in research and development, and solving complex problems
  • Ability to give specialised scientific and technical advice to colleagues, senior clinicians, and other professionals
