An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Training Manager to join the Education and Training Team at the West Midlands Genetics Laboratory (WMGL) in order to support formal and informal training programmes under the guidance and direction of the Education and Training Lead. This is a key role within the Central and South Genomic Laboratory Hub, responsible for coordinating, developing and delivering high-quality education and training activities that support workforce development across our scientific and technical services.

We are seeking a motivated and organised individual who is passionate about education, staff development and the future of the healthcare science workforce. The successful candidate will support and coordinate formal training programmes, including the Scientist Training Programme (STP), Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST), apprenticeship pathways and other Modernising Scientific Careers programmes, while also developing and promoting continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities for staff at all stages of their careers.

Main duties of the job

Working closely with scientific, technical and clinical colleagues, you will help ensure that trainees and staff receive a high-quality learning experience, supporting programme delivery, trainee progression, training quality and compliance with national standards. The role offers the opportunity to work collaboratively across multiple laboratories, engage with national training bodies, and contribute to shaping innovative education and training provision within one of the UK’s leading genomic laboratory services.

The Training Manager will coordinate, develop and deliver education and training programmes across the WMRGL and the wider Central and South Genomic Laboratory Hub. The post holder will support a range of formal training pathways, including the Scientist Training Programme (STP), Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST), apprenticeship programmes and other healthcare science training routes, ensuring trainees receive a high-quality learning experience and progress successfully through their programmes.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree (first or second class with Honours or higher degree) preferably science related.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience delivering professional training in Genetics or a related field

Desirable

  • Post graduate qualification in education e.g. PGCert

Knowledge

Essential

  • Accurate record keeping with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Detailed knowledge of training delivery in a diagnostic laboratory setting including an understanding of Good Scientific and Laboratory Practice.
  • Some experience of policy and strategy development
  • Management expertise

Desirable

  • Experience in a clinical genetics laboratory

Analytical & Judgement

Essential

  • Developed interpersonal skills to enable adequate communication with a wide range of clinical and non-clinical colleagues.
  • To seek out and establish networks and contacts to support training delivery
  • Ability to show initiative to identify and create solutions to problems and challenges
  • Experience of timetable planning and delivery.
  • Ability to work flexibly.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines. Enthusiasm/motivation
  • May be required to travel to attend national meetings with overnight stays.
  • Evidence of ability to supervise and manage a range of projects simultaneously
  • Ability to identify and use a range of educational tools and resources

Professional/ Managerial/ Specialist Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to gather and assimilate information i.e. use of internet and relevant databases. Computer literacy is essential including word processing, email and spread sheets.
  • Ability to communicate complex information in both verbal and written formats

  • Demonstrate alignment with the values and beliefs of the Trust
