Job summary

We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic registered nurse or mental health nurse to work in the Community Eating Disorder Service (CEDS). This role will predominantly be in our physical health team, but there is also the opportunity to undertake other areas of work in the main team alongside this.

CEDS is an established multidisciplinary team which provides a service to individuals with a moderate to severe Eating Disorders.

The successful candidates will undertake the physical health aspects of the individuals’ care in accordance with their care plan. There is also the opportunity to undertake assessments and support therapeutic interventions within the wider team. The post holder will need to be prepared to travel to clinics in Exeter, Torbay and
North Devon.

Experience in undertaking physical health tests/observation and/or mental health assessments is desirable but not essential; full training will be provided. An interest in the treatment and management of eating disorders is essential.

We are looking for a clinician with excellent communication skills who enjoys working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. We need someone who can be flexible and deal with situations that can be unpredictable whilst remaining calm and patient-focused.

Current CEDS team members include speciality Doctors, GPs, Psychological Therapists, Specialist Mental Health Practitioners, Dietitians, Peer Support Workers, Physical Health Clinicians and Administrators.

Main duties of the job

• To work closely with other multi-disciplinary team members in the assessment of clients’ needs and provision of treatment to individuals with a diagnosis of an Eating Disorder.
• To provide individual psychoeducation to patients and their family/carers, especially in relation to the physical health complications associated with an eating disorder
• To ensure that clinical and professional standards are maintained.
• To assess care needs, develop, implement and evaluate individual care plans & risk assessments
• To undertake physical health assessments including observations i.e. blood pressure, weight checks, Pulse, ECGs and take bloods.
• Facilitation, promotion and supervision of education and audit.
• To promote and improve quality of service provided.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Degree-level qualification and professional registration as a Registered Nurse.
• Evidence of Continuing Professional Development

Desirable

• MSc or BSc in Advanced Professional Practice or Nurse Practitioner
• Nurse Prescriber qualification
• Qualification/training in medical monitoring/investigation interpretation, e.g. blood results, ECG
• Recognised management training and qualification or willingness to work toward it
• Training to Level 4 in Safeguarding children, young people and adults: roles and competencies for Health Care staff

Experience

Essential

• At least two years post-registration, with at least 2 years’ experience working as a qualified Nurse Practitioner
• Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team
• Ability to work flexibly across service boundaries and with professionals from health care settings such as GPs, District General Hospitals
• To effectively manage own caseload and work flexibly to support service needs
• Basic knowledge of eating disorders and their potential impact on physical health
• Ability to identify safeguarding issues and refer appropriately
• Ability to liaise & offer specialised consultation & advice to other agencies
• I.T skills
• Risk Assessment and Management

Desirable

• Clinical supervision and mentoring experience
• Experience of managing other staff
• Knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 & 2005, Codes of Practice, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberties

Knowledge and skills

Essential

• Standard Computer skills e.g. use of Electronic Patient Record and Office packages
• Mobility to travel across Devon to different Acute Trusts or GP surgeries as needed
• Manual dexterity required to take blood samples, blood pressure, pulse, weight checks, etc
• High-level communication skills, including presentation and facilitation skills; consultation and engagement skills.
• An ability to adjust communication effectively to meet the needs of a diverse group including internal and external stakeholders.
• Good organisational and interpersonal skills, tact and sensitivity. Ability to gain trust.
• Ability to influence significant changes in service delivery through motivation and encouragement which may be highly complex and sensitive and include some barriers to understanding.
• Confidence to deliver sometimes contentious and difficult messages to a broad range of stakeholders
• Able to own problems and get involved in the solutions.
• Ability to manage risk and undertake risk assessments.
• Ability to analyse complex information, from both physical and mental health, and interpret to facilitate a management plan
