Job Summary
The post-holder is responsible for assisting in the provision of the Mortuary service Trust-wide; there are three mortuaries within the Trust, located at Northwick Park, Ealing, and Central Middlesex Hospitals. Work in this area requires frequent exposure to highly distressing and emotive situations in addition to periods of intense physical activity, with the need to maintain concentration for long periods. The post-holder will ensure that resources are used optimally and that documentation and records are created accurately and kept appropriately, and will carry out duties to support the efficient running of the mortuaries.
There will be a rotation of duties with the mortuary staff across all sites according to operational requirements. To ensure that the deceased and their relatives are treated at all times with dignity and respect, and perform a broad range of technical work activities, ensuring provision of an efficient service that is in accordance with Trust, Coroner’s, and Department of Health regulations and requirements.

Manage and operate the mortuary service at LNWH NHS Trust, ensuring its efficient functioning. Demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, and timely decision-making to support the seamless operation of the mortuary service. Previous significant experience in a mortuary setting is necessary, but appropriate training will be offered (depending on experience) as this role is developmental in nature.
Communication
To attend meetings as and when necessary to represent the department and provide specialist advice and information. Provide support and communicate to Pathology service manager and GM.
Key working relationships
To establish and maintain good working relationships with staff within the Trust, the Coroner’s Office, funeral directors, Police, and members of the public.

Training
Previous experience in a mortuary setting is necessary, and appropriate training will be offered, as this role is developmental in nature, depending on experience.
Information management
Must work in line with Governance and data protection protocols and ensure confidentiality is always maintained at all times.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
- Educated to GCSE level or equivalent in English, certificates required
Desirable
- RSPH Diploma/Certificate in Anatomical Pathology or Level 3 or Level 4 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology
Experience
Essential
- MUST HAVE Previous experience of working in a mortuary and dealing with deceased patients, including foetuses and children. In dealing compassionately with bereaved relatives in a distressing situation. Experience of working in a mortuary (hospital or Coroner’s)
Desirable
- Working in a mortuary technician role for min. 1 year
Knowledge
Essential
- Knowledge of mortuary procedures/ documentation
Desirable
- Knowledge of infection control, health & safety, and confidentiality issues
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Essential
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to use own initiative, where applicable, IT and keyboard skills. Ability to use Outlook, Microsoft Office/ Word/Excel spreadsheets. Ability to demonstrate accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to work well under pressure. Physically fit Full and valid UK driving licence, and access to own vehicle, which must be insured for use at work
