Table of Contents
This is an exciting and substantive consultant post at the heart of Greater Manchester’s community mental health transformation. The post holder will be the senior medical leader within their neighbourhood team, providing expert psychiatric assessment, treatment, and clinical leadership to a multidisciplinary community team. They will work closely with GPs, primary care networks, and partner agencies to ensure people with serious mental illness receive timely, equitable, and high-quality care within their local neighbourhood.
The post holder will carry a caseload of the patients within the neighbourhood, while simultaneously providing consultation, advice, and clinical leadership across the broader team caseload. This dual role — direct clinical care and population-level medical oversight — is the defining characteristic of the neighbourhood consultant model and distinguishes it from traditional CMHT consultant working.
Main duties of the job
- Provide specialist psychiatric assessment and diagnosis for patients referred to the NMHT, including new referrals from the Referral and Assessment Hub, GPs, and other agencies.
- Carry a direct caseload of patients within the neighbourhood team, providing evidence-based treatment, medication management, and ongoing clinical oversight.
- Provide daily consultation, clinical advice, and second-opinion input to MDT colleagues across the full team caseload — including advice to GPs for patients not currently open to secondary care.
- Conduct Mental Health Act assessments and, where clinically appropriate, apply for detention under the MHA 1983 (as amended 2007) as a Section 12(2) approved doctor.
- Assess, manage, and review patients under the Care Programme Approach (CPA), ensuring care plans are person-centred, co-produced, and regularly reviewed.
- Provide psychiatric input to multidisciplinary care planning meetings, CPA reviews, and complex case conferences.
- Prescribe and review psychotropic medication in line with NICE guidelines, Trust formulary, and shared care protocols, including clozapine monitoring where appropriate.
- Provide psychiatric opinion for Mental Health Tribunal hearings, Hospital Managers’ hearings, safeguarding processes, and other legal or statutory proceedings as required.
