Job summary

We require an enthusiastic audiologist to join our multi-disciplinary Paediatric Audiology team at Hackney Ark and The Royal London Hospital.

The post holder will be required to work efficiently and effectively, liaising with patients, carers, clinicians and other service users as required. Candidates will be expected to undertake a range of clinical duties including complex paediatric audiology assessment and habilitation.

The ideal candidate must enjoy working in a busy environment; the applicant will preferably have experience working in a paediatric audiology department. You must be flexible and a team player with excellent interpersonal skills. Experience in using Microsoft Office software, IT literacy, and numeracy is essential. Ideally, the candidate will be experienced in using Auditbase.

In view of the nature of the service, you must be able to deal calmly with children, young people and families who may at times be feeling anxious or distressed.

The Audiology service is managed by Barts Health, and we cover two districts in East London – Tower Hamlets and City and Hackney. We provide a service at many health centres and hospitals including West Ham Lane Health Centre, Stratford, The Royal London Hospital, St Bartholomew’s, Homerton and Newham University General Hospitals. Our wider team is made up of over 50 staff including Audiologists, a hearing therapist, newborn hearing screeners and clerical staff.

Main duties of the job

• To perform specialist diagnostic audiological procedures, and provide a comprehensive specialist hearing aid service to children, including determining care plans for individual patients, and involving carers and families as appropriate.
• To assist with the day-to-day management of the joint Tower Hamlets and City and Hackney Paediatric service.
• To take an active role in areas of clinical audit, research and clinical governance for the Audiology service, which may include designing and completing audits within own field, participating in data collection for larger projects, and contributing to the development of evidence-based protocols.
• To plan and prioritise elements of own workload, within the framework of service delivery priorities as defined by the Clinical Lead and Head of Service, and supervise the work of other members of the team as appropriate, including junior audiologists, trainees and students.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• MSc in Audiological Science plus CAC/CCC
• BSc Audiology OR BTEC qualification in Medical Physics and Psychological Measurement & Successfully completed both parts of BAAT I and II (or equivalent)
• Evidence of CPD
• Eligible/registered as a clinical scientist with HPC or on the voluntary register with RCCP

Desirable

• Advanced courses in Audiology
• British Sign Language Qualifications
• Deaf Awareness qualifications
• Membership of BAA and/or BSA
• Doctorate in Audiology (AuD, PhD)

Experience

Essential

• Post qualification experience
• NHS experience as a Band 6/ post CAC/CCC within paediatric audiology, including behavioural and electrophysical assessment and rehabilitation

Desirable

• Responsibility for areas of speciality within Audiology and/or general administration
• Experience of IQIPS
• Experience of managing staff
• Experience of school screening programmes

Knowledge

Essential

• Knowledge of the scientific bases of clinical and electrophysiological procedures relevant to paediatric audiology
• Knowledge of the fundamentals of normal child development
• Knowledge of the causes and appropriate management of hearing impairment in children
• Understanding of current approaches to hearing aid selection in children
• Knowledge of the function, calibration and preventative maintenance of audiological electronphysiological equipment, including basic fault-finding
• Knowledge of the current NHS structure and developments
• Thorough understanding of the concept and practical implications of clinical governance
• Theoretical and practical knowledge of Paediatric Audiology and advanced audioligical test techniques
• Awareness to work on own initiative and take routine decisions
• Awareness of budgetary limitation and constraint

Desirable

• An awareness of national Audiology and NHS developments
