Table of Contents
- Abstract and analyze complex clinical information from patient case notes and other sources
- Identify primary diagnoses, comorbidities, procedures, investigations and treatments for each period of care
- Translate clinical information into ICD-10 and OPCS-4 codes
- Process coded information to create Healthcare Resource Groups used to determine funding under payment by results
- Apply ICD-10 and OPCS-4 rules and conventions
- Update training manuals and publications when coding changes or clarifications are issued
- Inform coding team leaders about national and local coding changes
- Ensure coded information is accurate and reflects all diagnoses and procedures for each patient episode
- Investigate and collate information to support code assignment decisions
- Present findings during scheduled office meetings
- Attend internal and external training sessions
- Participate in regular coding audits and clinical coding validation processes
- Supervise, mentor, and support less experienced and trainee coders
- Provide structured feedback to individuals and management
- Support other coders and staff involved in the coding process
- Keep up to date with clinical coding developments
Requirements
- ACC National qualification
- Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy
- Knowledge of patient information systems
- Significant clinical coding experience in an acute Trust covering all specialties, including one year post-examination
- Thorough knowledge of ICD-10 and OPCS-4
- Ability to resolve complicated coding queries and implement agreed decisions
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Ability to work to deadlines in a pressurized environment
- Ability to code all specialties to 90%+ accuracy
- Ability to work accurately with attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure and as part of a team
- Good IT skills
- Understanding of anatomy and physiology, medical procedures, diagnosis and terminology
