Summary of the job

ELFT are happy to advertize for a Peer Support Worker with lived experience of ‘complex emotional needs’ (commonly labelled as ‘personality disorder’) to join the countywide Bedfordshire and Luton Complex Needs Service. Our service is working with service users, staff and carers to develop a learning culture that will improve the care and treatment for people with complex emotional needs and their families/carers in the community. The successful applicant will draw on their lived experience of ‘complex emotional needs’ and local services to illustrate that recovery is possible.

They will relate their recovery story in a way that conveys a sense of connection, hope and optimism to others who are earlier on in their journeys or experiencing tough moments and will provide time-limited assistance to enable service users to work toward their own recovery goals. The chosen applicant will benefit from good assistance from colleagues within the Complex Needs Service and the Peer Assistance Lead. This role will be situated at Mountbatten House, Dunstable and will need the post holder to travel to CMHT bases, inpatient facilities and other sites around Bedford, Central Bedfordshire and Luton.

Key responsibilities of the position

The job holder will work as part of a countywide multi-disciplinary specialised service for persons who experience problems classified as ‘complex emotional needs’ in a collaborative way to:

Build mutuality and reciprocal ties to validate experiences;

Increase optimism, hope, motivation and chance of change and/or recovery;

Provide emotional support through a crisis and when people move between different segments of the system (e.g. from acute crisis, inpatient stays, to community care);

Share information to allow detection and effective management of hazards;

Advocate for service consumers in their treatment decisions;

Provide time-restricted support to service users to enable them to make progress toward goals which may entail time with them in the community and attending appointments;

Model and share personal application of tactics and skills;

Share lived experience with carers to support their learning and enable them to serve service users efficiently;

Bring a lived experience perspective into clinical and team discussions to support the professional and personal growth of multi-disciplinary colleagues;

Accurate and complete clinical documentation to support effective communication with team members and other services.

Experience

Compulsory

Experience of healing from suffering, described as ‘personality disorder’ or complicated emotional demands.

There has been experience in using local services to commence a road of ‘recovery’.

Knowledge and Skills

Required

Ability to exhibit knowledge, lived experience and awareness of the issues associated with ‘personality disorder’ or complicated emotional needs

Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of personal healing and how that could relate to others

Knowledge and dedication to service users’ rights, involvement and service-user led initiatives’

Knowledge and understanding of recovery approaches and practice

Trauma-informed practice knowledge

Ability and willingness to engage in quality improvement projects and activities

Understanding the value of equality and diversity

Strong communication skills (verbal and written) as it relates to legal requirements of client care and related issues and documentation of such care.

Ability to deal with high-stress circumstances with service users, carers and staff

Ability to identify one’s own limitations and to seek appropriate support and supervision

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check
