The Main Outpatient Department at Fairfield General Hospital holds clinics for many different specialities within several different locations.

The Trauma & Orthopaedic clinics are looking for an established Orthopaedic Casting Technician who holds the British Orthopaedic Association Plaster Certificate and has recent experience working in a demanding plaster room environment. With experience of providing support to Trauma and Orthopaedic clinics, the Accident and Emergency department and as well as any trauma in-patients during clinic hours.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in a range of casting techniques, including Fixed Rigidity Casts, and have a wide range of casting skills with Plaster of Paris and Synthetic materials.

Candidates need to be mindful that the post will require flexibility of hours across the working week between the hours of 8.15am and 5:30 pm to meet the ever-changing service.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide instruction to patients/carers regarding plaster care and encourage patient/carer involvement.
  • To ensure practice in casting and bracing techniques throughout the Trust is underpinned by best practice/evidence-based practice, incorporating current advances in casting care.
  • To ensure patients’ safety, comfort, privacy, and dignity are always maintained.
  • To contribute to the effective structure of clinics.
  • To network effectively with similarly qualified colleagues to ensure best practice.
  • To keep apprised of current advances in casting care and facilitate their implementation for the benefit of the patients.
  • To support, supervise, and provide educational direction to clinic staff working within the Plaster Room environment.
  • Knowledge of incident reporting and requirements for root cause analysis
  • To maintain all equipment and consumables required for the Plaster
  • Room to function effectively and safely.
  • To assist in controlling stock limits, requisitioning departmental stores, and equipment.
  • To report any faults and/or repairs required to the line manager and/or other departments as necessary.
  • To ensure all equipment is functional and meets service requirements.
  • Undertake risk assessments on the environment and the use of all associated equipment.
  • To work as directed in an appropriate clinic environment, should there be no requirement for the post holder’s specific skills in the plaster room.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Association of Orthopaedic Technicians Casting Certificate / British Casting Certificate

Desirable

  • Additional related study or willingness to undertake relevant further study or training

Professional Registration

Essential

  • Qualified Orthopaedic Technician or Nursing Associate with a casting certificate

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential

  • Experience within a plaster room environment
  • Demonstrate skills and knowledge in a range of casting techniques
  • Team working

Desirable

  • Venepuncture training
  • Knowledge of incident reporting and requirements for root cause analysis

Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Good communication skills (written & verbal)
  • Ability to work in demanding situations and to deadlines
  • Willingness to work flexible shifts and across sites
  • Wound care skills
