We are seeking 2 motivated and compassionate Band 4 Nursing Associates to join our new Women’s Health Hubs (WHH) based within our female Surrey prisons. These nurse-led hubs are being developed to provide accessible, trauma-informed and patient-centred care to women in custody, addressing a broad spectrum of women’s health needs.

1 post will be based at HMP Send and HMP Downview

1 post will be based at HMP Bronzefield

Women in prison often face complex physical and mental health challenges, including higher rates of trauma, self-harm, substance misuse, and reproductive health issues. Young adults and marginalised groups are particularly affected by gaps in consistent health education and support. As part of the WHH team, you will play a crucial role in helping to reduce health inequalities and improve outcomes for this population.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver routine nursing care and health checks in a trauma-informed and sensitive manner
  • Support screening programmes and reproductive health services, including cervical cytology screening and sexual health testing
  • Facilitate access to a wide range of physical and mental health services
  • Provide health education sessions, health coaching, promoting health literacy and self-management skills among women in custody
  • Contribute to the reduction of urgent and emergency interventions through structured, proactive care
  • Work collaboratively with registered nurses, allied health professionals and partner services to ensure continuity of care

About you

We are looking for Nursing Associates who are:

  • Qualified and registered with the NMC as a Nursing Associate
  • Passionate about women’s health and reducing health inequalities
  • Able to work within a trauma-informed and person-centred framework
  • Skilled at engaging with women from diverse backgrounds, including those with complex health and social needs
  • Confident in delivering health promotion and education sessions
  • Flexible, compassionate, and committed to teamwork in a challenging environment

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

  • Good general education to A Level or GCSE standard or equivalent
  • Nursing Associate qualification and NMC registration
  • Evidence of personal development in previous employment
  • NVQ 2 medication administration qualification

Desirable

  • Care certificate or equivalent

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Previous relevant work experience

Desirable

  • Experience of working within a secure environment

Attitudes, aptitudes & personal characteristics

Essential

  • Willingness to learn and develop; recognises the need for flexibility
  • Able to work well within a multi-disciplinary team

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with patients of varying levels of understanding
  • Able to present factual information and refer questions to others where appropriate
  • Able to deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy
  • Basic working knowledge of IT and emails
  • Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues in the Healthcare setting
  • Willingness to undertake further training in areas such as patient personal care, phlebotomy, and wound care assessment
