The NHS Respiratory Metagenomics Programme aims to introduce clinical metagenomic services in the NHS, with implementation underway in a growing national Network of up to 30 NHS Trusts by 2028. Essential to these efforts is the collection of multi-site evidence to continuously evolve the quality of service provision to support long-term commissioning in the NHS. A multi-faceted evaluation is being undertaken as part of the programme, including multi-site observational studies and a health economic review.

The Data Analyst will be a core member of the evaluation team, working with senior leadership to shape the analytical strategy and generate insights from large-scale genomic and health data. They will provide insights to support decision-making across a national network of laboratories and hospitals. The ideal candidate will have an interest and background in the subject area and a strong track record in producing understandable outputs and communicating clear, data-driven insights.

Main duties of the job

The analyst will be responsible for using advanced analytical techniques to inform service and technology evaluation, and future commissioning of the service. This includes defining dataset requirements, designing collection and driving access, and implementing analytical solutions, including development and maintenance of code, to direct data-driven decisions and to support a robust evaluation of the implementation, effectiveness, utility and benefits of metagenomics in microbiology services.

They will work with complex clinical data across a range of EHR/LIMS systems across the network to generate datasets and monitor agreed evaluation metrics over time against programme milestones. The analyst will liaise with a range of clinical, scientific and operational colleagues within the programme team and across the UK, including NHS, UKHSA and academic partners. Additional responsibilities will include collating data submissions, data cleansing and validation to improve the quality, and presenting performance dashboards.

The analyst will also have the opportunity to work across other genomic service improvement programmes hosted at GSTT, working with colleagues in the Centre for Clinical Infection and Diagnostics Research and in the South East Genomic Medicine Service.

Person Specification

Education

Essential

  • Educational background or equivalent work experience in clinical data analytics

Desirable

  • Educational background or work experience in molecular biology or genomics

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Experience of querying, extracting, processing and analysing complex clinical data from EHR/LIMS software
  • Prior experience working with metagenomic or genomic sequencing data to inform decision making

Skills/Knowledge/Ability

Essential

  • In-depth knowledge and proven track record of the use of data analysis techniques with complex health and care data for the purposes of service and/or technology evaluation

Desirable

  • An appreciation of the relationship between the healthcare providers and commissioners, and local authorities, and the responsibilities of each
