We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Psychologist to work within our Children’s Learning Disability service across Gwynedd and Anglesey.

The service works to support the health needs of children and young people with additional learning needs aged 0-18 years and their families and carers. The team consists of learning disability and paediatric nurses, support workers, and clinical psychologists and works closely with the wider multi-disciplinary team of paediatricians, psychiatrists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and dietitians.

Under the supervision of a Clinical Psychologist, you will be involved in supporting psychological assessment, formulation, and adapted psychological interventions to children, young people, and their families who are experiencing psychological distress and who may present with behaviours of concern to communicate their needs. There will be opportunities to develop your skills in audit and clinical research and support various service development projects whilst continuing your professional development.

Main duties of the job

  • To assist in the provision of a psychological service to clients within the specialty under the direction of the supervising clinical psychologist.
  • To be responsible for the planning and prioritisation of one’s own workload and activities following the direction and guidelines given by the supervising clinical psychologist.
  • To undertake assessments of clients and implement programmes of care or intervention following guidance from the supervising clinical psychologist.
  • To undertake research activities as required and directed by the supervising clinical psychologist.
  • To work within the guidelines given by the supervising clinical psychologist.
  • The ability to speak Welsh is essential for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential

  • Good Honours Degree in Psychology
  • Eligibility for Graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.
  • Some knowledge and understanding of the client group with whom the post holder will be working

Desirable

  • Attendance at skills development courses or training.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with clients within a clinical, social care or educational setting.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with children, young people and their families within more than one clinical social care or educational setting.
