The Adult Critical Care Co-ordination and Transfer service (ACCOTS) is the dedicated, commissioned Adult Critical Care Transfer service for the Midlands Region. We are hosted by two acute Trusts (University Hospital of Leicester within the East Midlands and University Hospitals of Birmingham within the West Midlands).
ACCOTS provide consultant led triage, decision support and co-ordination of all referrals and patients who require or are likely to require specialist critical care escort, intensive monitoring, organ support and/or specialist treatment are within our scope. We undertake transfers for escalation of care (including time critical and urgent), repatriation, continuation of care and capacity reasons.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our enthusiastic, high performing and friendly team within ACCOTS at our East Midlands Base situated in Castle Donington. We are looking to build a substantive medical team of consultants with a minimum 2.0 PA contract (in extenuating circumstances, we may be able to consider less).SPA will be paid pro-rata.
Main duties of the job
ACCOTSwithin the East Midlands is based at Trent Lane Industrial Estate in Castle Donington. The successful applicant will work alongside the Lead Transfer Nurse and Transfer Practitioners to deliver high quality critical care transfers. As a Duty Consultant you will be responsible for ensuring the following elements;-
- Triage, Co-ordination and decision support for all referrals to ACCOTS.
- Supervision and delivery of clinical care,
- Teaching, training and continued professional development,
- Governance and quality Improvement,
- Exemplary leadership behaviour that supports ACCOTS, values and Strategy.
This role will report into the Clinical Lead and Clinical Director primarily as well as the ACCOTS General Manager.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Full GMC registration with license to practise.
- Specialist register entry in a relevant specialty (Intensive Care Medicine, Anaesthesia).
- oDemonstrable training, competency and currency (ongoing regular exposure) to the delivery of in-hospital critical care.
Desirable
- Higher qualification in retrieval/transfer medicine (e.g. Diploma in Retrieval and Transfer Medicine or international equivalent).
- Formal training or postgraduate qualification in leadership and management
- Relevant specialist courses (e.g. Advanced Life Support, European Trauma Course, point of care ultrasound, difficult airway management).
Knowledge&Experience
Essential
- Compliance with GMC Good Medical Practice, appraisal and revalidation requirements.
- NHS Consultant (or equivalent).
- Experience in Intensive Care Medicine or Anaesthesia with an interest in Intensive Care Medicine
- Extensive experience within Intensive Care Medicine or Anaesthesia of independently assessing, resuscitating, stabilising and treating critically ill and injured adult patients (synonymous with Level 4 capability of the FICM curriculum and Stage 3 learning outcomes for Intensive Care within the RCoA curriculum).
Desirable
- Previous critical care transfer and/or retrieval medicine experience in a dedicated service (e.g. another ACCTS, retrieval service in Australasia, long-distance aeromedical retrieval service).
- Clinical leadership and management experience

Additional Requirements
Essential
- Fitness levels sufficient to carry out critical care transfer work (e.g. delivering clinical care to the patient on a critical care transfer trolley, carrying equipment short to medium distances, manual handling of patients).
- oBe comfortable working in the ambulance environment which includes confined space and motion.
