About YEMEN HEAVEN
YEMEN HEAVEN is an independent award-winning restaurant in the heart of York serving authentic Yemenite food in a modern and distinctive dining setting.
Since opening, it has received substantial regional and national attention and built a great reputation for its food, hospitality and unique culinary personality.

We are particularly interested in chefs that want to learn, care about consistency & quality and want to have a longer term career with YEMEN HEAVEN.
Previous experience of Yemenite or Middle Eastern cooking is an advantage but not needed. You will be fully trained on our dishes, methods of preparation, spices and kitchen systems.
What The Role
The successful candidate will be joining our expert kitchen staff preparing and creating dishes for service, keeping YEMEN HEAVEN’s standards of quality, consistency, organization and food safety, depending on experience.
For experienced candidates, the position will encompass real chef duties and increasing ownership of preparation, cooking and serving.
Responsibilities may include
- Prepping materials and daily mise en place
- Preparing and preparing items as per YEMEN HEAVEN recipes and specifications
- Working in different parts of the kitchen during preparation and service
- Cooking meat, seafood, breads, rice dishes, sauces and other menu items
- Ensuring that dishes are prepared consistently and are presented to the acceptable standard
- Learning and improving understanding of Yemenite ingredients, spices and traditional cooking techniques
- The following parts, recipes and preparation techniques are controlled
- Monitoring food quality during preparation and service
- Helping the kitchen run efficiently at rush hour
- Receiving, inspecting and storing deliveries correctly
- Helps with stock rotation, stock control and preventing wasteful food waste
- Keeping workstations clean, orderly and well stocked
- Food hygiene, allergy and health and safety protocols
- Performing opening, closing and cleaning tasks
- Good communication skills with cooks, front of house personnel and management
- Assisting junior members of the culinary team as required
- Identifying operational problems and assisting in keeping the kitchen running well
- Suggesting ideas for improvements to dishes, methods of preparation and kitchen organization where appropriate
More experienced chefs could also be responsible for:
- Service management of a kitchen section
- Mentoring and training junior kitchen personnel
- Preparation and service standards monitoring
- Supporting stock management and ordering
- Supporting menu development and seasonal items
- Assisting Head Chefs with kitchen organization and quality control

- Previous experience in a professional kitchen is desirable.
- Applicants applying for Chef level positions should have past experience preparing and cooking meals in a professional restaurant, hotel or catering kitchen.
- Experience with Yemeni, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean or similar cuisines desirable but not essential.
Training and Career Development

- Yemenite flavours and ingredients
- Food preparation and cooking methods
- Portioning and plating standards
- Organization of kitchen and service procedures
- Allergen and food safety procedures
- We encourage advancement in the kitchen.
As skills and experience are gained a competent Kitchen Crew member may progress into roles such as Commis Chef, Chef de Partie, Sous Chef and other senior kitchen roles.

Skilled Worker Sponsorship
- YEMEN HEAVEN can accept Skilled Worker sponsorship for those people being recruited for a legitimate Chef role.
- The amendments to the Skilled Worker rules from 22 July 2025 will see chef roles fall under transitory immigration procedures.
- Sponsorship may therefore be considered in the following cases where the applicant:
- Was given permission as a Skilled Worker under the Immigration Rules before 22 July 2025
- Has had continuous Skilled Worker permission since then
- Are you the professional with the experience and ability needed to accomplish the actual Chef role that is available
- Meets Skilled Worker salary and other immigration standards as relevant
- The compensation needed for a sponsored appointment will depend on the Skilled Worker wage standards that apply and the unique immigration circumstances of the applicant.
- Applicants who were initially given a Skilled Worker Certificate of Sponsorship before 4 April 2024 may be subject to transitional wage requirements.
- Kitchen Assistant or Kitchen Porter – Not available for Sponsorship (Skilled Worker).
- Applicants who do not fit the transitional Skilled Worker criteria must have a right to work in the UK that is not reliant on a visa.
