We are seeking to recruit a full-time Therapy Assistant to join our Vascular and Surgery Therapy team at St.Mary’s Hospital.
This post supports the therapy team across Vascular, Surgery, and Orthopaedics in delivering patient-centered care. The therapy assistant will perform delegated patient care tasks, including practicing daily living activities following upper or lower limb amputations, supervising exercise, and carrying out pre-admission and discharge planning tasks like access visits. This post-holder will also be expected to undertake a variety of administrative and practical tasks independently; contacting patients pre-operatively, ordering equipment, cleaning wheelchairs/equipment after patient use, overseeing departmental equipment stock, and preparing resources for treatment sessions.
In providing this service, you will be expected to be professional, efficient, and effective, with excellent communication skills, and committed to continuous development. The successful applicant will work as part of a supportive team and receive training and supervision.
Main duties of the job
- To lead protocol-driven exercises/treatments for individual clients once assessed and designed by a qualified therapist, and to progress within protocol.
- To assist the therapists in the planning of activities or programmes.
- To support, participate in, run, and provide feedback on group treatment sessions.
- Ability to work with minimal or no immediate supervision of a qualified therapist.
- To use own clinical judgement and knowledge regarding progressing and/or making minor modifications to treatment programmes within agreed clinical protocols and parameters.
- To report any untoward changes in the patient’s health status immediately to the relevant qualified health professional.
- To manage clinical risk within a caseload at all times, including observing patients in all situations applicable to therapy, ensuring safety and security at all times.
- To be able to safely use a range of equipment e.g., hoist, standing frame, and mobility aids. To carry out demonstrations and practice techniques with patients and carers to ensure safe and effective use of equipment and mobility aids.
- To liaise with patients and carers who are often distressed, to obtain specific information under the direct or indirect supervision of their Therapist.
- To be involved in and be able to support and provide empathy in discussions around end-of-life and emotionally distressing issues with patients and their carers.
