An exciting opportunity has arisen at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust for a role as a Band 6 Senior Anatomical Pathology Technician.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, and dynamic Specialist Anatomical Pathology Technician with fantastic communication skills and a proactive approach to join our team in Mortuary Services.

The successful candidate will need to have good mortuary experience and, after initial training, be able to take charge at one of the mortuary sites in the absence of the Mortuary Manager. The successful candidate will join the small but busy Mortuary Team.

The role is to provide a compassionate and customer focussed high quality mortuary service in conformance with the relevant legislation, code of practice, and guidance to the Crown Office, local authorities, private organisations, and individuals, including bereaved relatives.

Main duties of the job

  • The post-holder is responsible for assisting in the provision of the Mortuary Service Trust-wide; there are three mortuaries within the Trust, Charing Cross, Hammersmith, and St Mary’s.
  • Work in this area requires frequent exposure to highly distressing and emotive situations, and in addition to periods of intense physical activity, with the need to maintain concentration for long periods. Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to organise and prioritise work are required.
  • There is a need to work alone and to also work well within a small team, sometimes under challenging circumstances. To ensure that the deceased and their relatives are always treated with dignity and respect, and perform a broad range of technical work activities, ensuring provision of an efficient service that is in accordance with Trust, Coroner’s, and Department of Health regulations and requirements.

Person Specification

Education/ qualifications

Essential

  • Certificate & Diploma of Anatomical Pathology Technology or Level 3 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology
  • Good basic education to GCSE Standard

Desirable

  • Level 4 (Diploma equivalent) in Anatomical Pathology Technology from the RIPH (Royal Institute of Public Health)
  • Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology
  • Specialist knowledge and practice of post-mortem techniques
  • Able to work towards level 4
  • Member of the AAPT

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive knowledge of all aspects of mortuary management and autopsy procedures

Desirable

  • Experience of working within an NHS environment
  • Previous experience deputising mortuary manager
  • Experience with handling multi-faith deaths

Skills/knowledge/ abilities

Essential

  • Practical and analytical skills associated with post-mortems.
  • Able to work alone or part of a team.
  • Experience working within a mortuary environment.
  • Advanced sensory skills to enable the reconstruction and assistance in autopsies, including suturing.
  • Good working knowledge of the Human Tissue Act (2004) and HTA code of practice (Code B)

Desirable

  • Experience in managing small teams
  • Mentoring trainee APT staff through the Level 3 AAPT qualification
