To participate in delivering safe, effective, and compassionate care to patients within the community setting, contributing to a supportive and responsive maternity service.

The postholder will work as part of the community team to support women, families, and newborns, undertaking delegated clinical and non-clinical duties appropriate to their scope of practice.

Within the first 12 months of appointment, the postholder will commit to:

  • Undertaking and successfully completing the Diploma in Newborn Hearing Screening
  • Completing all required Trust training and competency frameworks

Main duties of the job

The Band 4 Community Maternity Support Worker will deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care to women and newborn babies within the community setting, working as part of the wider maternity multidisciplinary team.

The postholder will provide routine postnatal care under the delegation of a registered midwife, undertaking clinical tasks within their scope of practice. This includes newborn blood spot screening, newborn hearing screening, jaundice screening, maternal observations, maternal blood sampling (where trained and competent), and the provision of evidence-based infant feeding support.

The role involves working in partnership with women and families to promote health, well-being, and informed choice, while contributing to parent education and early parenting support.

The postholder will maintain accurate electronic and written records, work flexibly across community maternity services to meet service demand, and escalate safeguarding concerns promptly in line with Trust policy and statutory requirements.

The role requires a commitment to ongoing competency development and adherence to GWH STAR values, ensuring high standards of care delivery at all times.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ 3 in healthcare or equivalent. Committed to within the first 12 months, undertaking trust training program, including some private study, building a portfolio, and completing the competency framework
  • Has completed the Level 3 Diploma for Newborn Hearing screening or equivalent training
  • Training and /or competency in the following:
    • 1) Patient vital sign observations
    • 2) Venepuncture
    • 3) Neonatal observations
  • Owner and Car driver

Desirable

  • Training and /or competency in Blood glucose monitoring

Experience

Essential

  • Significant and relevant work/social experience within a health care environment, which has utilised skills and knowledge that could be of benefit to the post
  • A basic understanding of the organization of midwifery care
  • Previous experience of working with Members of the public

Desirable

  • Previous experience working within a childcare/women’s field
