Are you a general practitioner looking to provide primary care services within our community hospitals? We are looking for a part-time general practitioner to provide medical support across our community hospital sites within Dorset Healthcare. The principal base for the role is Yeatman Hospital, Sherborne.
Community hospitals provide rehabilitation, step-down, intermediate care, palliative and end of life care services for patients who have typically transferred from acute hospitals following illness, injury, surgery or deconditioning. Patients are supported to maximise their independence and return home wherever possible.
A significant proportion of the work involves the management of frailty, multimorbidity, rehabilitation medicine, symptom control, advance care planning and end of life care. The post holder will work closely with multidisciplinary teams including Advanced Clinical Practitioners, nursing teams, therapists, pharmacists and social care colleagues.

Main duties of the job
As a general practitioner you will join the Community Hospitals Medical Team and contribute to the medical rota, supporting safe and effective care across community hospital services. Whilst Yeatman Hospital, Sherborne will be your substantive base, the role includes regular and flexible working at our other Dorset HealthCare community hospital sites to meet operational requirements.
As a general practitioner you’ll provide medical care for the patients on the wards, in collaboration with the Responsible Clinician/Multi-Professional Advanced Clinician, Advanced Practitioner and the ward nursing team. You will support the supervision of the clinical work of the Advanced Practitioner and will develop a mutually supportive clinical relationship with the Advanced Practitioner in managing the patient’s clinical need.
As the general practitioner, you’ll provide timely clinical review of patients, participate in ward rounds, and keep up-to-date and accurate clinical records. You’ll implement appropriate treatment plans for patients, in collaboration with the patient and the multidisciplinary team, including relevant assessment of treatment escalation plans and resuscitation status where appropriate.
You will carry out the daily tasks as identified in the Medical Diary & in liaison with the nurse in charge of the ward. Provide clinical sessions at other Dorset HealthCare Community Hospital sites as required, supporting service resilience, continuity of care and workforce flexibility.

Education, qualifications & training
Essential
- MBBS or equivalent and hold a Licence to Practice
- Minimum of 3 years post-registration experience Completion of GP Training Scheme or equivalent hospital medical training/or completion of relevant specialty
- Registered with GMC
