We are seeking an enthusiastic graduate psychologist to work within a busy neuropsychology department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

The post-holder will work under the supervision of two Consultant Clinical Psychologists (in neuropsychology), a clinical psychologist, and alongside a second assistant psychologist. The role entails the assessment of clients with neuropsychological difficulties arising from neurological conditions and acquired brain injury.

Typically, the post-holder will support the work of the Clinical Psychologists by administering, scoring, and interpreting (under supervision) a range of psychometric tests, including cognitive assessments, mood, and behavioural measures.

The post-holder will work across the general outpatient neuropsychology service within neurosciences, the traumatic brain injury service, and the epilepsy surgery service across both outpatient and inpatient settings. The post holder will also support the neuropsychology input to a national sports concussion clinic led by neurosurgery colleagues.

We are a research-active department, and there will be opportunities for involvement in ongoing research and literature reviews. The post would suit somebody wishing to pursue a future career in clinical psychology more generally or clinical neuropsychology specifically.

Main duties of the job

  • Under the clinical supervision and management of a qualified and suitably experienced professional psychologist, works independently on a day-to-day basis according to a plan and objectives agreed and reviewed at intervals with the qualified psychologist and within the overall framework of relevant team/service area policies and procedures.
  • Supports qualified psychologists in the delivery of clinical services, providing individual and group-based psychological interventions.
  • Supports qualified psychologists in governance, audit, research, and clinical administrative activities, collecting, collating, and analysing data, writing and presenting reports, and assisting in project development under the guidance of the psychologist as required. Uses IT equipment and software as required, including statistical, database, spreadsheet, and presentation.
  • Assists qualified psychologists in the planning and organisation of teaching/training programmes and undertakes/contributes to teaching and training activities as required.
  • Participates in personal appraisal and continuing professional development activities as agreed with the psychology line manager, including general training required in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Trust.
  • In completing duties, draws on a knowledge base commensurate with a good honours degree in psychology and eligibility for graduate membership of the BPS.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • *An upper second-class honours degree or higher in psychology.
  • *Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society.

Desirable

  • *Further post-graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice, and/or research design and analysis.

Experience

Essential

  • *Experience of work with people with mental health problems or disabilities, or other relevant problems or disabilities (e.g. learning disabilities, organic impairment).
  • *Previous experience as an Assistant Psychologist (paid or unpaid), Assistant Clinical Psychology Practitioner (paid or unpaid), Research Psychologist in an applied clinical setting or qualified member of a relevant health care profession.
  • *An awareness and understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with mental health problems and disabilities and of contemporary issues in the field.
  • *An awareness and understanding of the differential needs of people from black and minority ethnic communities and from other minority groups and of the service issues arising within a multi-cultural urban area.
  • *Awareness of boundary issues between professionals and between clients and psychologists.
  • *An understanding of statistical analysis commensurate with an honours degree in psychology.

Desirable

  • *Paid work in a setting providing direct care.
  • *Experience working with patients affected by neurological and/or other physical health conditions.
  • *Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • *Experience of collecting research data, including questionnaire design and interviewing.
  • *Experience using microcomputers and associated software for purposes of data analysis and reporting, including databases and statistical programmes such as SPSS.

Additional Criteria

Essential

  • *Adaptable and able to work flexibly when required (e.g. in the light of changing service priorities).
  • *Capacity for tolerating frustration, change and high levels of demand with an ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • *Capacity to attend to and concentrate on clinical and research related information on a frequent basis (e.g. when undertaking client assessments or analysing statistical data) and to concentrate for prolonged periods of time on an at least occasional basis (e.g. when undertaking psychometric assessment).
  • *Capacity to frequently sit in constrained positions for client assessment and therapy.
  • *A commitment to the involvement of service users and carers on the development and delivery of mental health and other care services.

Desirable

  • *An interest in working with people with mental health problems or other disabilities.
  • *A desire to explore a career in professional psychology.
