We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our Mortuary team. This post will be based at Whitechapel, but on occasion the successful candidate may be required to visit any of the other sites with a Deceased Holding Unit. The post holder will be required to assist in all aspects of Mortuary Services, including post mortem provision for adults, perinatal/paediatric cases, and care of the deceased.

You will assist with Porters’ competency training/ Hospital medical staff inductions and attend meetings with our service users. Potential applicants should pay particular attention to the Job Description and Person Specification for this post to ensure they meet the respective criteria.

Main duties of the job

The mortuary services at Barts Health comprise one mortuary facility based at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel and 4 other deceased holding units within the Trust at St Bartholomew’s, Newham, Whipps Cross, and Mile End.

The Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics Division provides diagnostic and screening services for the whole of North East London. Our facilities are close to underground and DLR services. The Mortuary service performs approximately 200 post-mortems per annum and is a regional referral centre for perinatal cases. The Mortuary is HTA-accredited. Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • 5 GCSE passes inc English and Maths or equivalent
  • Certificate in Anatomical Pathology Technology or Level 3 Diploma

Experience

Essential

  • At least two years’ experience in anatomical pathology technology. Level 3 Diploma/ in Anatomical Pathology Technology
  • Experience in teaching junior staff

Desirable

  • 2 Years of experience, will consider candidates currently undertaking the Level 3 Diploma

Knowledge

Essential

  • H&S Legislation and Procedures
  • Quality Management Systems

Desirable

  • Previous mortuary-based work experience
  • Knowledge of Governance procedures

Skills

Essential

  • Competent in complex anatomical pathology techniques
  • Intermediate computer skills
  • Able to communicate effectively with staff (written and verbal)
  • Able to effectively communicate with a wide range of service users

Desirable

  • Good keyboard skills

Personal and people development

Essential

  • Reliable, responsible, organised person.
  • Able to perform required duties with any appropriate aids or adaptations
  • Hold no reservations in handling human body fluids, tissue, organs, or infected material in accordance with Health & Safety policies.
  • The post holder must be willing to have appropriate vaccinations
  • Able to work as part of a team.

Desirable

  • Previous NHS experience
