Job Summary
The mortuary service at MFT includes the adult mortuaries at Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital, Trafford General Hospital, North Manchester Hospital Mortuary, and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital mortuary. The adult mortuary performs Computed Tomography Post Mortem (CTPM) hospital and Coronial postmortems, and the RMCH mortuary provides a regional Coronial and Home Office postmortem service. The MFT mortuaries are fully HTA and ISO accredited.
We are looking for two Qualified Anatomical Pathology Technicians with Technical and Scientific knowledge of mortuary policies and procedures.
The post holders will undertake a broad range of mortuary duties, including assisting with the day-to-day running of the mortuary, care of the deceased, and postmortems in both the adult and paediatric mortuaries, whilst ensuring the provision of a high-quality service across both the adult and paediatric services is maintained. It is the expectation that the postholder will work across all MFT mortuary sites.
Main duties of the job
- To assist in the postmortem room at both H M Coroner’s & Hospital consented postmortems, including assisting in postmortems using specialized techniques – Adults and Paediatrics
- To assist with the release of deceased persons to funeral directors or other authorised persons in accordance with standard operating procedures – Adults and Paediatrics
- To assist with the receipt of deceased persons from the hospital and community in accordance with standard operating procedures – Adults and Paediatrics
- To assist medical staff, Coroners’ Officers, and other agencies with the viewing and identification of deceased.o To accompany bereaved relatives whilst visiting the deceased and in accordance with standard operating procedures.
- Required to assist with high-risk postmortems
- To perform all aspects of practical mortuary work of varying complexity, including routine, specialist, and high-risk work. e.g,. dissection, evisceration, reconstruction.
- To liaise with the Trust Bereavement Team, Coroner’s Offices, and the Coroner’s Liaison Officers.
- To liaise with Home Office Pathologists and the Police.
- All employees have a duty to develop and deliver a customer-focused service.
- To be responsible for the accuracy of data entered and held by the Mortuary, including that on electronic systems.
- Facilitate tissue donation procedures.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
- Holds a recognised RSPH Anatomical Technology Diploma (Level 4) qualification or has equivalent experience
Desirable
- GCSEs in Maths, English, and at least one Science or equivalent qualification.
Knowledge
Essential
- Technical and scientific knowledge of mortuary policy and procedure
Desirable
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Knowledge of end-of-life care.
- Knowledge of the HTARI classification
Experience
Essential
- Recent extensive experience working in a busy adult or paediatric mortuary
- Experience in assisting the Consultant Pathologists with postmortem examinations, undertaking evisceration and reconstructing the deceased.
- Experience in assisting with high-risk postmortems.
- Experienced in specialist techniques
Desirable
- Experience in assisting with forensic postmortems
- Knowledge of radiological procedures
