Wife sharing will not be strange to those familiar with the internet, social changes, and happening around the world. But for the sake of those not aware of such a trend, I will be sharing wife sharing: meaning, practices, benefits, and the disadvantages.

Meaning of Wife sharing

It is a practice where a wife or husband in a legitimate relationship permits each other to have a sexual relationship with others outside their union. This is an open relationship that has the backing of the two parties. The sharing partner could be known by the husband. Sometimes the man chooses his spouse sex partner. Also, it could be a once a while arrangement or a steady sexual period.

Like I said wife sharing is not a 21st-century trend. It is an old practice under a different guise. The popularity of it comes as a result of technology (Internet), and modern religion. All these put together exposes the practice. Wife or husband sharing comes under different names like partner swapping, or wife swapping. But I will focus on wife sharing in this post.

The practice of wife sharing is not only a western culture issue. It is a known fact that certain tribes among the Eskimos practice wife sharing. Keeping the company of your friend’s wife while away for hunting is a show of friendship and hospitality to the Eskimos. There is nothing to be ashamed of if such an affair resulted in pregnancy. To them raising children is a communal effort and it doesn’t matter who is responsible for the child.

It is also practiced in some part of Africa and Asia. An example is the Ovahimba and Ovazimba tribe of Namibia. They are from the Kunene and Omusati region of the country. In their culture, wife swapping or sharing is called ” Okujepisa Omukazendu”. It means offering a wife to a guest. According to that tradition, the best way to show hospitality to your revered male guest is to offer your wife on the night of his visit. In that case, the husband will vacate the room to sleep elsewhere or outside.

One bizarre thing about this practice is the general acceptability of it among the community. The ideas has overwhelming support from the traditional ruler, the elites and women. Amazingly a lawmaker is sponsoring a bill to legalize it the legislative chamber of the country.

Benefits of Wife sharing

1. Men use it as a cover-up. You wonder why a man would willingly share his wife with another man. A Nigerian proverb says a fox thinks other animals eat the same thing like him so he offers what he eats to entertain them. Some men use wife sharing or swapping as a cover-up for their promiscuous lifestyle. They feel guilty for taking advantage of their wife because of their extramarital affairs. Thus, they use this to compensate or make their wife feel she could enjoy sexual freedom with another sexual partner as they do.
2. A solution to boredom. Sexual boredom makes some couple resort to wife sharing. Dissatisfaction sets in as you see and sleep with the same person day in and day out. So an intermittent break from the usual person to a fresh sexual experience rejuvenate the relationship
3. Openness. Trust is a major key to a successful marriage. Wife sharing builds trust between the husband and wife. This is so because nothing is done in the secret, but all sexual affairs are a joint decision that is open to the two people in the relationship
4. Sexual gratification. Sexual satisfaction is a bond that binds two people in the relationship. One of the benefits of wife sharing is the sexual gratification enjoyed when both parties try another sexual partner.
5. Increase sexual experience. There are no two relationships that are the same. Wife swapping gives the couple the advantage to explore new sexual experience with another person. Sometimes one of the parties in marriage is not dynamic to love and sex making. He or she is only familiar with only one or a few methods which may not go down well with the other partner. 6. Health reason. Due to a health challenge, a couple could agree to try the option of wife sharing. Due to the inability of the man, especially to perform his sexual role effectively, he may agree to share his wife with someone else. For instance an impotent man can agree to share his wife with another man so he could cover the secret and claim the paternity of the child. Though is in agreement with his wife.

Disadvantages of Wife sharing

1. Jealousy. More often than not jealousy set in with time in a wife sharing issue. The reason is not farfetched because the woman begins to talk about how better in bed the new man is. It is at this level the man begins to feel a sense of insecurity in the relationship. This can lead to an irrational behavior.
2. Paternal complication. One of the results of sexual activity is pregnancy. If this occurs, the paternity of the child becomes questionable. In places where the financial implication of getting the DNA of the child is not affordable, claiming the paternity of the child could jeopardize the original assumed good intention of wife sharing. This one of the disadvantages of wife sharing.
3. Sexual diseases. Almost 20% of the Namibia population are HIV positive. This is the result of unprotected sex and ignorance. Wife sharing increases the chances of many sexually transmitted diseases
4. A broken marriage. Sometimes the intention to protect the marriage by giving a partner sex freedom can backfire. Before long the affection of the woman is drawn to this new sex partner and she considers moving out of the relationship to join the new man permanently. After all, the new man has what her previous lover lacks.
5. Child abuse. In most cases even in an adoption situation you know the child is not yours. If pregnancy occurs as a result of this wife swapping, the child from that relationship is at the mercy of the man. It means the child may not be treated fairly. That results in child abuse
6. It leads to abuse. Wife sharing most times leads to abuse. This abuse includes the abuse of the woman’s body and dignity of womanhood. First, since the woman is not the original wife, the man can manhandle her as a sex tool. Second, the dignity of womanhood is injured.

Sex is naturally and morally reserved between a man and his wife but when it goes beyond this it becomes an abuse. Because human wants is insatiable you soon find the woman seeking sexual pleasure from another person after the first attempt. What makes her not satisfied with her legitimate husband will soon drive her to multiple sex partner. Prostitution is simply an abuse of sex and gross sexual indiscipline. Most times people use this wife sharing idea to indulge in sexual perversion

7 Breaking of the marriage vow. Most reasons giving by those involved in wife sharing shows they do not understand what marriage vows mean. Part of that vow (though some have removed that) says you will be together for good and for worse. It implies you bear with each other’s weakness. When sexual desire or pleasure wanes in marriage, there are several other routes to solving the problem than a wife or husband sharing

8. It erodes the sanctity of marriage. One of the effects of wife sharing is it bastardizes the marriage institution. A part of the benefit of marriage is sex. If a wife could enjoy sex freely out her marriage, it has defeated one of the purposes of marriage. If a single lady is allowed to sample another sex partner apart from her boyfriend, where is the discipline, love and affection. It will imply you don’t need to get married. All you need is to get a child or two and have sex partners to quench your sex thirst.
